More power when Z is cold??

It feels like my Z actually makes more power when its cold then when its up to operating temp. Does anyone else have this happen? Also the induction noise changes... dont know how to describe it really, it just sounds different.

Me too me too me tooooo...

It sounds slightly sweeter or rounder in tone and feels like it has more low range power (must fight the temptation to 'give it to it coz it hasn't warmed up yet)
I think maybe because everything hasn't expanded fully and the compression is slightly higher when cold.:zlove:

Yeah, In mine the difference is quite noticable.

Would it possibly be goin into safety boost? Or maybe heat soak? grrr its annoying

It is because the intake air temp is colder hence more oxygen in the air, hence more power

It'd be nice if it ran that way all the time (god... we're a bunch of horsepower hungry buggers, aren't we ...!!?):D

if you want to bring down intake temps get a bigger intercooler or radiator, oil cooler, more cooling more power can be handled,

why would u hit the accelerator hard if the vehicle is not up to operating temperatures

You dont have to hit it hard for the difference to be

noticable. I got some bigger smics, hopefully should be going on soon so maybe that will help :) does anyone have perth zed performance's number? Im trying to get her booked in for the 100k service

    yup

more air more fuel more power!!! cooler the air the more dense. This is why on a dyno day every one get low results on a hot day. This is why combustion engine aircraft can't fly to high, the air gets so thin the engine stalls.

As simple as that hey? I guess Im a bit confused

cause I swear I read somewhere that the ecu wouldnt allow full boost until the engine was up to a certain temp? Or am I completely on the wrong track? Also would the power figures quoted by nissan for the 300zx tt be taken from when the engine is cold or warm? thanks

yes full boost wouldnt be available untill operating temps...the ecu would be in safe mode under a certain temp

He was talking about the engine temp not the air temp. When the engine isn't hot it performs better was what was originally said.

yeah but the heat of the engine heats up the intake temps

Possibly also due to the oil being thinner before it heats up.

Actually...intake temps pre-combustion chamber have only a small amount to do with why an engine has more HP with lower engine temps. There are a number of reasons such as oil temperature, intake temps, etc which all rob a smidgin of HP, but he main reason is in the piston temperature and piston head design. As air enters the chamber and hits the piston then it is immediately heated and expands restricting flow into the chamber. However, if the incoming air is not heated by the piston and the piston reflects the heat of combustion, you start to approach ideal conditions. A polished piston runs during the power stroke. A smooth polished piston runs cooler than a non-polished piston even after combustion deposits have turned both pistons black. A cool, smooth piston will transmit a minimum of heat to the incoming fuel air mix.

So...go buy some new pistons. :D

I'd say my TT runs happiest at around 80 deg c. No this is not on a cold engine. But it's certainly sounds happier @ 80 than 90-95.

I would not know about running better when it is cool, it never drops below 32c here at Ayers Rock and is frequently over 40c, but not for much longer! I am heading back to Adelaide on Sunday for good, perhaps then I will know what you guys are talking about!!!

For those of us with EBCs (elec boost control)

The safety boost feature is disabled.
So we can generate full boost on a cold engine.
We have to be especially careful with the cold engine.
I never give mine any boost until the thermostat has opened.
