Looks like a nice new Z :zlove: As soon as I'm off my exams, ill be down at Bryan's store to give you all a hand (Manual labour )
HAHA win! i saw pics before everyone else looks so awesome as i said martin. cant wait to see what comes of this beast. glad you stuck to 2+2 haha. see you saturday mate.
I would like to say a huge thankyou to Bryan (Brytech) and Meg (MEGZED) who took time out of their busy schedules to take me zed hunting over the past couple of weeks! Loading up the car The view out the back of the mighty Jeep: Damn zed tailgaters! Stopped for some lunch and to buy some ropes to secure the merchandise: Back at the Zed Shed, it was time to start stripping mkI, but firstly we needed to get the car inside. After playing musical zeds with the other cars there it was time to push mkI inside. But the front had a flat which was making it near impossible to move! Look! Still coolant inside Maybe this is all the car needs to fix it Finally, success! Although moving the car ten centimetres at a time took its toll (sorry Meg!) mkI and mkII: After a big day we called it a night, and the next day a very hungover Bryan met me back down at the zed shed to get cracking with the stripping! From this: To this: The master at work: An ingenious way to straighten chassis That's about it for the moment, the parts I wont be using will be coming up in my for sale thread found here. Bryan and Callum at the Zed Shed have been working overtime to pull my engine and tranny ready to drop in mkII. Will update this thread as we progress further! Thanks for checking it out, Martin :zlove:
Cheers mate, that'd be great - will post up details of a tech day when the time comes! Thanks very much Rod, will catch you then
Kewl! Good to see you back with another Zed How do you think the engine faired after being upside down? Hopefully it's still OK...
nice colour on the new zed some nice mods you had on the old zed, are you still going to be using the running gear in the new zed??? do u have a pic of ur red dash you had at all ? how much power where u making with the old setup
Cheers Chris, pretty sure it should be okay - landed the right way up and did so in under 10 seconds. Was still running too Hey Chad, yeah dropping the engine in and manual conversion courtesy of Bryan, plus whatever else I can use! I'll try find a pic of the dash, was making approximately 220rwkw on 14psi before I got the new chip and fpr I'd estimate it was sitting around 240rwkw with plenty more in it! Thanks Ross, I'm hoping it'll all be sweet for your zed party, am really looking forward to it! Yeah mate definately, the car basically crumpled around the cage, which looks fairly unscathed btw! Definately a must for all my zeds from now on Plans for mkII is keep it looking fairly stock, but keep the vents, lowered with some modena rims and going single exhaust this time!
Great to see "job's on". You lot don't fart about. Sure will be an interesting thread, good luck and have fun on the re-build.
Hey Nigel, nope - reservoir Thanks mate, thanks for your generous donation as well, much appreciated! Hey Kingy, that's fine - I'll be down in Geelong this Saturday so if you want to come down then to take measurements feel free! Rod will be doing the same
damn thats a very clean shell you got there mate, look forward to seeing it alive with you behind the wheel
Glad to see you've found another Z. Hopefully it won't be too long & you'll be back cruising the streets
UPDATE: Well, Bryan and Kalon have been working overtime to get my car back on the road but at the moment I think my car should be renamed as “Christine”! Bryan got the engine and gearbox into MkII without too many dramas, and also performed a manual conversion. But before the engine went in first issue was that the previous owner had cut the majority of the power steering lines in the engine bay which had us all scratching our heads, after some new lines were sourced and fabricated it was finally engine in time! The second issue was that they were unable to get the engine to crank, it wouldn’t even turn manually by hand with a breaker bar! I was dreading the possibility that being upside down had seized the motor from the lack of oil pressure.. The engine was pulled again and the sump removed. Alarmingly, there was no oil in the sump! Upon closer inspection it was found that the sump had dented, blocking the oil pickup and all the oil was stuck in the top half of the motor.. A slight teardown later Bryan had the heads off and replaced some bearings as well as the top piston rings while he was at it which didn’t look the best – then all back together again! Dropped it in, cranked the engine and woo hoo! It’s alive!! A compression test revealed that compression had jumped up a massive 40psi across all cylinders with the new top rings (the old ones were looking pretty shabby I’m told). Okay, so then that was all good. The next drama occurred while the car was up on the hoist.. One of the cables snapped! This caused MkII to slip on the RHS and almost crush Kalon, who was working underneath the car at the time (Glad you’re okay!). The car held alright, but was on an angle and dented all along the sill where it caught, just beneath the door. Eventually the crew were able to get the car down on the ground safely with clever use of a stack of wheels and a jack and thankfully, there was no structural damage. Bryan spent a great deal of time pulling the sill back out and respraying and by the time I was able to get back down to the Zed Shed there was no damage to be seen! During this visit I was able to turn the key and fire up MkII for the first time, very exciting – hearing the engine roar back into life was awesome!! :zlove: There were still a few small issues that needed to be sorted out before roadworthy so it was looking hopeful that the next weekend would be when I got to finally drive it! Spoke to Bryan today and for some reason he lost ALL steering on his way to the RWC at 80km/h but it finally kicked back in before he started heading straight for a tree. Very lucky!!! So there we have it, three lucky escapes no thanks to Christine – the possessed zed. It’s unfortunate that there has been a string of bad luck, as a result from a seller who sold me a car which they no doubt knew had dodgy steering, to a hoist that was sold as having “new cables”. Huge thanks to Bryan and Kalon for all their hard work and many days spent working on the zed. Their persistence and hard work to overcome the problems encountered are a testament to their abilities as one stop zed repairers! Next step is replace the steering rack which was salvaged from MkI before it was scrapped and should be smooth sailing from here on in… Touch wood! Cheers, Martin :zlove:
