In my on-going quest for a z I was speaking to a salesman today (JSA in melbourne) about the cars they had in stock right now. I saw on their website they had a note saying they had a range of 94+ z's coming in soon. I asked him about that, and he said that now that the import laws have changed, it is possible for them to bring in late model z's. He said to expect that there would be a lot more 94-98 model cars showing up in the market in the next few months - and they had a number of them undergoing compliance right now.

He wouldn't give me any ballpark figures on what they were going to charge on their new stock, apparently he had to ask someone about it .. however, since this place is trying to flog off 1990TT's for $18.5k, i highly doubt their "new stock" would be cheap. What would you expect a stock 96 (e.g. NA/manual/2 seater) be worth in the aussie market anyway??

Now does all this sound right to you guys? or is this more salesman BS?? I have my eye on a couple of cars right now.. but starting to wonder if i should wait a while if theres a bunch of late models on their way from japan right now.. hmmmmmmmmmm

Sounds like salesman BS to me ........

I don't think anyone is approved for 300zx's under the new compliance yet.

Coupes will be allowed in because they never sold a 2 seater in OZ

2+2's will have to be 1997 or newer because 2+2's were sold in Oz until 1996 (which prohibits import of those years)

Cost of compliance (when it becomes available) is probably about $4500 + the cost of new tyres (mandatory) + if any mods are done the car MUST be returned to oem

With all the added expense and frigging around, How much do you think they will be charging you for a late model zed ?

    some clarification..

Hmm, spoke to their manager this afternoon. Apparently I got things confused a bit .. (not surprising, i dont have much an idea about import laws)

Apparently they are bringing in a "test car" that they will get complianced under new legislation, which (apparently) is part of their process for getting a permit for importing z's.

Once this is done, they can look at bringing in post 94 stock. As a rough figure, I asked what kind of money they would expect for a 96 NA manual 2 seater. He replied they would put that up for about $26-27k.

So yeah, not cheap, and outside my budget, but i thought it was interesting that more would be coming into the country..

    My Take....

    1. No one has been approved to compliance them under the RAWS system.

    2. To be approved to comply them cost a heap of money, I was told it cost about 70,000 to setup yourself up as a raws and jump through about a million hoops.

    3. Who would put up that sort of money when there are a significant number of Zed already here and the cars are getting on in years. Not to mention that resale values arent exactly going up at a fast rate.

    Estimate:

Carsensor.co.jp 300ZX 1994-1996 average kilos is about 60,000, price is between 800,000-900,000 JPY which is about 10,000-11,000 AUD

(Based on 10,000) Shipping is gunna be 1500 plus customs/taxes (which is based on purchase cost) will be 3000 or there abouts.

Compliance at 4500, new tyres (?) good service, maintaince, onroads etc

    TOTAL 19,000 AUD

for 19,000-22,000 you will get a 94-96 300zx with average K's of about 60,000 in OEM unmodified condition.

So if this shops does this then they are likely to charge a nice mark up 27,000 I reckon is on the generous side, then if you want to enhance in a similar fashion like a 1990 zed then thats gunna cost a fair bit. 35,000 or more i reckon all up.

So on the other hand you could by a 1990 zed from a forum owner is great condition, that has been treated pretty darn well and received the love, attention and capital outlay required for under 20,000 no problems.

only difference i see is 15,000 grand, a few kilometers on the clock and obvious the 1996 has been improved at a factory level (not that much to justify 15,000) sooo take your pick.

Tell me im wrong (i probably am) are my numbers out of the ball park? (not sure)

    Comments please

I have heard along the grape vine....

that at least one if not more shops in Melbourne will soon be getting compliance plates/rights (whatever you call it) for zeds. So maybe what the guy told you is not far from the truth.

As for the prices, I would say that a 95+ zed would reach the high 20's low 30's depening on condition.

    Cheers

How many late models were there?

I've got Brian Longs book upstairs on the 280/300ZX. Even in Japan it makes me wonder how many late model Zeds there would be. Too early to go up and grab the book. But the production figures really fell back from the mid 90s onwards.

On Zeds and just about any sort of expensive sportscars at that time.

All pretty close on taget guys

most of the info here is pretty much correct, 27k for an NA is outrageous though, they will be a lot cheaper for late model vehicles.
