hey guys i'm lookin at an intercooler kit and just wanted to know weather its alright all opinions are welcome http://www.justjap.com/store/product.php?productid=16902&cat=0&page=1
It's shiney and it says "intercooler" so why not? There's probably a few missing details regarding the cores' specifications however. Plus we could always start a tube & fin vs bar & plate debate? lol It seems almost "too" cheap to me.
lol well to be honest i dont even know the differance between tube & fin / bar & plate... kinda new to it but slowly learning
Good place to start, http://www.are.com.au/feat/techtalk/tanks.htm Long story short, bar and plate restricts flow but cools better (air has longer to dissipate heat) but an appropriately sized tube and fin core flows better which in 95% of cases is what you want. Without getting caught up in the details though the above I/C seems pretty decent, just ask them what it's pressure tested to and the estimated pressure drop. My HKS intercooler is tube & fin.
For the very reasons you mentioned in the second post is the very reason why you shouldn't go FMIC. Not to stir up the whole FMIC vs SMIC but the smart engineers at Nissan saw it fit to utilize x2 SMIC's rather than a FMIC. They even ensured there were facia vents and ducts to make them very effective. As one mentioned, it's a good idea to improve upon that same concept but a whole different story to change the dynamics of it. By nature the Z's engine bay is extremely cramped and is plagued by a very hot engine bay even under normal conditions. Utilizing a FMIC presents the possibility of compounding those excessive heat issues. I'll go out on a limb here and say that the majority of those that go the FMIC route are mostly or predominatly for esthetic reasons. Best leave that sort of mindset for the ricer or Honda crowd because the Z doesn't lend itself to that and shouldn't. In only extreme cases of race type Z's or radical builds, I'd condone a FMIC, but other than that, you'll do your engine a great service by retaining the SMIC configuration and just finding a good quality (read larger) set of SMIC's. The GodSpeed (rebadged as JapTech in your neck of the woods) would be a more than capable set of SMIC's for your Z. If you're not totally convinced I invite you to do a search for "overheating" related issues. They are abundant and detrimental to an efficient and safe running of the Z. The addition of a FMIC only stands to compound those types of issues. If you're not in a position where you have to go the FMIC route, than don't. Your engine will thank you for it and stands to last a lot longer if you don't.
Yeah they're nasty as, foam sucks, you'd pawn them off straight away on an eBay $1 No-Reserve auction and get some decent K&N or Apexi ones! Side-by-side front mount, nice choice anyway. I'll be going down this route sometime too
