Needed to change thrust bearing so gearbox etc out. Came across a bit of a problem (i think) when having a look in there. It would seem tehe rear main may be leaking but I'm unsure as to whether the amount of oil present is 'normal'.

Also I believe this sort of problem roots clutches. Is this true? The car always holds in gears but will no longer hold a second gear burnout at the strip very well (on street tyres, for crowd pleasing). Holds fine in first, but not in second.

What would be recommended? New clutch and seal? Would one of the $450 dollar change over jobbies from TTZed be enough to handle my power requirements (Filter, 12Psi, and turbo back exhaust to come)?

    yes looks like it...

before you took everything apart, was the botom of your sump moist with oil?? When the rear main seal leaks, the oil trickles out and collects on the bottom of the sump or bell housing. The part itself is cheap, its the labour that makes it a little expensive but since your box is off anyway then just change it. Yes it does ruin clutches so if its been leaking for a while it may explain your clutch issues.

    Yeh it was a bit

moist, but I was unsure as to whether it was the slight power steering leak I had a while back or oil, cause it's all a bit dirty so you can't check fluid colour.

Spend the extra $$$$ if possible

and get a new pressure plate. Theres no guarantee on how long the changeover will last. Also if you can get the flywheel machined and slotted while you got it all apart. i think its about $80 for that, not sure as i got mine done last year. And also from memory the rear main seal should be like $25.

    Max:thumbsup:

    Pos Seal Prob

There may be a leak. The time and effort to remove the box is hard part so I would replace the rear seal as insurance. If the seal is leaking it might be because of age and wear or th PCV's could require cleaning or replacing. If they stuff up you get boost pressure going where it should not be and that can cause seal leaks. Best check.

    Good Luck,
    Peter

    Also check the sump seal

I had a leak I thought was the rear main seal, but in actual fact was the sump gasket/seal leaking oil right at the very back underneath where the rear of the crank is.

Dude dont even pretend your not....

...going to change that seal, it costs bugger all, is easy to replace when changing a clutch, and I know from personal experience what happens when that oil seal lets go, which is a stuffed clutch. Even a brand new clutch will be destroyed if it gets any oil on it.
While your there, do yourself a favour and replace the clutch fork pivot ball. It also costs bugger all and is changed out in a couple of minutes with the box off the engine.
As for your question about the clutch, I wont hazard a guess as I have no experience with high power zeds:thumbsup:

    Yes, more than likely

Most of the feedback you have had here is spot on. I work for 1 of Brisbanes best tuning shops & i can tell you that 'any' amount of oil on your clutch will ruin it permanently. That even goes for oily fingers when assembling a new clutch, its big no no.
Repco have rear main seals available for around $15 & yes TT & N/A are the same. It even shares the same seal with the single turbo VG30.
Just quickly also, when putting your new seal in dont forget to run some grease around the inside of it or if you dont you will scorch it & it will leak before its time.

As one of the other guys has mentioned also to check all around the sump & fix any oil leaks you might have there also. Its easier doing these jobs while you have the box out.
