How do you know it's the inverter?

My panel failed and I got a high pitched (low volume) whistle from the inverter + circa 150VAC available from it. Turned out the wires had seperated off the EL panel.

Unfortunately I cracked the rear panel during repair & reassembly. :(

As a result I'm just about to replace my centre panel & may have the inverter f/s.

    I keep telling you Max.....>>

All you have to do is come over and we cam try your panel and invertor out by swapping with my panel and inveror. I also know exactly which wires they are referring to.

Responding to SCRUFF & COVE >>>

    >>> If the inverter is 'whistling', as mine was, then it'll be 99% certain the EL panel that's stuffed. As Pete suggested, go visit & get him to check it out.

Upon pulling my rear panel apart (no prob) I found the wires connecting to the 'cardboard-like' EL panel had come adrift at the solder joint.

Repairing the connections is NO simple task, but I did it. Only prob was upon reassembly of the rear panel it cracked (whilst hot) ... very very easy to do! So whilst my illum panel now works I've got an ugly crack in the panel! :(

Can't imagine you want a cracked illuminated panel, Neil?

Scruff: Go see Pete and attempt repair but BEWARE, it's not easy .... good luck!

I thought that it might be some extra helpful info... might have saved some time of just basically hooking up some cables instead of swapping some things over.

    EL Panel

Thanks Rob, ro the info, unfortunately I live in Perth as I wwould look you up, and you wouldnt believe it I was in the Gold Coast last weekend. Anyhow the inverter is making a buzzing noise and not being electrically minded i took it back to the Auto sparky that fitted it and he informed me that it was stuffed. I will purchase your inverter if you still have it for sale. Cheers Brian:thumbsup:

    Sorry Brian

... it's not for sale at the moment. COVE has first option.

Sorry too, I thought you were in Vic & could go see WYKKED to get tested. One day we'll get STATES listed with POST details, hopefully.

You sure yr inverter's stuffed? I'd get a 2nd opinion or test it yourself with multimeter. BTW, if you touch the output wires and get a good old ZAP, it's working!

Same here, high pitched noise only when headlights are on...

I even disconnected my speakers thinking it was coming from them... D'Oh!

So where is this inverter, and this panel that is easily cracked...? I'm not saying that I can fix it but I like to investigate things for myself before I go to the experts (forewarned is forearmed). So any info/advice would be greatly appreciated...

And I did recently save myself $1600 by posting on this forum (see my power steering problem post). ;)

    Thanks
    Bill

    Most likely a faulty connection......>>

On the panel itself. Mine started doing the same thing so I opened it up and resoldered the connection (twice) and it is now fine.

Hard to get panel off? I just tryed I found 4 screws and a centre clip...

but still couldnt even get it to move, or do I have to unatach more parts.

It seemed to start to stay on more as I left it on but it still flickers.

I tryed yelling at it but it just seemed to flash more.:wacko::wacko:

Does the Inverter actually do anything?

In normal circumstances? Mine had power going to the inverter, but the output plug wasn't connected to anything at all.

So to solve my screaming inverter problem I just snipped the wires. Have I done a bad thing? I checked all my brake lights, reversing lights etc and they all still work fine...

Are there other consequences I that I don't know about?

    You did the right thing...

... so long as you taped up the 'live' +ve wire.
