interesting exhaust recommendations (opinions anyone?)

Have been collecting quotes to get my exhaust replaced as it is on it's last legs. Just went down to Exhaust Technology (for those interstaters Exhaust Tech is one of the more expensive but one of the better exhuast shops around town), and the guy there had some very different ideas to usual.

His plan is to leave the standard dumps, go 2.5" mild steel to a 3" single cat, then branch back to twin 2.5" stainless to a pair of resonators and then a pair of mufflers. Said that an x-pipe is a waste of time and that should give optimum results, also said the cost for dump pipes is not worth it for the minimal gains.

This creates some problems for me as I have already purchased a 2.5" stainless x-pipe. My plan was to get the tuneagent 2.3" dump and test pipes, then my x-pipe, then 2.5" stainless into some big oval mufflers.

What do people think; is his idea sound or should I push on with the system I had planned?

Also if I go with my way would it be the idea to have a pair of resonators cut and shut into my x-pipe?

that doesn't care how the exhaust performs, 2 x 2.5 into 3 doesn't go and the dumps are where you're going to get the most gain.

haha.. what a load of shite.

1 3" cat aint gunna cut it.. and even if it did, why go back to split after it?

dumps make plenty of difference, you can feel the difference mid range with only dumps

stuff the resonators, and put cats into the test pipes

the x pipe should make it quiet enough.

i agree that x-pipes dont work on a turbo car for the whole pulse theory as we dont have equal length headers to carry a timed pulse and the exhaust wheel would kill any pulse genereated anyway (makes sense to me), but they do make a difference to noise at no cost to performance which is more than you can say for a resonator

i reckon you were on the right path in the first place

Hey minivan, what's this you say about X-Pipe's?

I have had some conflicting comments when it comes to sound and X-Pipes, some say it will reduce noise and others say it does not help noise at all.

Re: Hey minivan, what's this you say about X-Pipe's?

i can only go by what i have read and 'experts' (i use the term loosley) that i have spoken to

pulses and scavenging is out of the equations as you require equal length headers and no turbos for that lot of physics to hold,

they do make it quieter, or so i have been told by terry down at mindarie custom exhausts (one of the best in the buisness) hes done it before and apparently has proven that it makes no power difference on a turbo car but reduces noise significantly. i chose to go without, and my car is pretty loud, but i like it that way.. if i get tired of the noise (doubt i will as i drive a company car all week, falcon ute, noise is refreshing. haha) i'll be oipting for an x-pipe first as i dont see terry as having any reason to lie about it as he wouldnt make any more/less money from inserting resonators

if you want more info than that you would have to speak to him about it.. Mindarie Custom Exhausts

Well turns out my exhaust isn't too loud

or on the marker anyway. Funny story, I went round to visit a mate who installs A/C's and I was telling him how I installed these mufflers on the Zed and now it's just too freakin loud. Anyway, he whips out his new toy he bought yesterday and tells me to take it home and try it out. I unzip the case and low and behold, a dB meter. SO I get home, set it up for peak hold and give the Zed a gradual increase through the rev range to 3500RPM where the noise seems to disapear and, 90dB exactly.

Good news I won't get in trouble with the boys in blue but it does still resonate badly in the cab, very uncomfortable on the ears. Think I will invest in an X-Pipe, I'm sure it will give some performance gain as it is a bigger diameter pipe for a start than standard H-Pipe and the joining of the two shares the gas load out into each muffler.
