    Hey guys,
My insurance has come up for expiry and I wasn't really keen on going with Just Car again as they've just jacked up the premiums despite me having the best rating.
So I started looking around and SGIO seems to have a pretty good price. After talking to them about modifications and such, they indicated that if the car had any modifications that made it unroadworthy, any claim would be rejected, even if it did not contribute to the accident.

So I've got a bit of a dilemma here, I've got a 2.5 inch turbo back exhaust, EBC, sway bars etc which are perceived to be illegal modifications and are likely to result in comprehensive insurance being pointless. After visiting the DPI website, I've noticed that you now need to submit for approval then bring over the pits for the permit to be issued. I don't even know if I'd be able to pass pits, probably too low, slow oil leak etc which are very costly to fix, but dont' really affect anything. (I'm intending to address the leak soon). I've just gone to Just Car and noticed that all mods have to be legal mods etc as well, so I'm thinking I've just wasted 3 grand last couple of years on insurance that wouldn't have covered me.

I'm just curious, what do you WA boys go with for insurance? Do you guys have your modifications all permitted? Because if mods aren't legal, then is any insurance actually possible?

Shannons is $300 cheaper then elders and by far better than any other company I have done.

I'm insured for around the $1,000 mark for a pretty damn high agreed value with everything covered... and i mean everything.

I've tried several times and their policy states up front that you need to be 25 and over...wth???

The problem I'm really having is in relation to modifications, legality and insurance. I suspect that most people that mod their cars haven't done it through the legal process and I was curious as to what people have done, what risk v benefit they've determined etc.

If I think about it more, the likelihood of an insurer agreeing to insure and pay out on a car that is technically illegal is practically nil.

Thanks, looking forward to it. I've declared mods to JustCar, but the mods need to be legal in WA according to their system for it to be processed as a claim.

anyone else have any thoughts on this?
I've had a look around and some people seem to believe that it's a case where if the modification contributed to the accident, they will refuse to pay, but technically, by their rights, they're allowed to refuse it if any modification is illegal. Even if you put it on your insurance policy...

I really am curious now as to how people have done this.

Have most people just agreed to take on the risk of an insurer not noticing that an illegal modification has been made and pay out? This seems like a pretty big risk.

Or have people actually put their car over the pits and gotten permits to mod? This seems like a very time consuming and costly activity.

As I've said before, I've heard that if the modification did not contribute to the accident, then they can't refuse to pay out if you've declared it. However, I haven't really seen any concrete proof or statement of this on any insurer's policy. Under the DPI website, it indicates that anything which modifies power, noise etc needs to be approved and otherwise, is illegal. If an insurer is being particularly picky, anything could be picked up as illegal and reject a claim.

Note: I'm not interested in who you're with unless it's actually relevant to whether you could make a claim or not...

LOL. Tried that with my old turbo n14 pulsar... it was going to cost many thousands, and completely nullified the savings made by my ripping the car apart and doing the work myself. I just got the engine numbers swapped and alerted my insurance company that I'd modified the car. With the TT I've just done the same really.
