hey guys, now that i know what im looking for regarding the zx i wanna get, ive started to look at some insurance packages and before i start ringing up the 50 different insurance providers, i would like to ask some questions.1. How much would I be charged per year for full coverage? Considering this is my first car, in my name anyways, im 21, no accidents, a few tickets, you know the normal kinda stuff.2. What kind of package do you recommend. I dont know much about insurance, just from what ive read a what people tell me. For example, should I get comprehensive or 3rd party or what?3. I might be able to put it under my mums or dads name, thats what I did when I was on my P's, however, i want this to be MY car, bought with MY money and be under MY name. But if it means paying an extra $1000 just for insurance I might forget all those MY's and just put it under someone elses name. What do you think? My name, or parents?4. Please add any extra info that you think I need to know. Thanks a lot guys.

ummm errrr if you get a TT forget about full insurance at your age. I waited until I was over 25 to get a N/A zed :) coz even for the N/A most insurance co's didn't even want to know me until I was over that age.

    the sad truth.....

Are you getting an NA or TT?? The sad truth is that at your age, and the fact that this is your first car under your name, either car will cost you HEAPS to insure. Both are fast cars (TT quicker obviously), and Insurance companies will just love to insure you. NOT! ALso, if you get a Jap import, that already rules out some insurance companies as the big companies like RACV only insure Aus vehicles. You can investigate 3rd party insurance, but I myself would always be paranoid with only 3rd party insurance. You could try putting the car under your parents name, but I think you'll find that if ever you do have an accident, the excess will be riduculously high. And your rating points wont increase as fast. The other option is to not get insurance at all, but in my opinion this is a stupid option. Just to give you an example dude. I got my zed when I was 24. It is a J-spec NA. The best I could find was Just Cars Insurance with $1500 premium a year. And thats with me already being a rating 1 after having another car for already 5 years with no claims. Since you have no rating, and are only 21, expect to pay anywhere in the $2k-3K price range. Sorry dude, but insurance companies dont like young guys driving fast cars...:( :( :(Cheers

    I can back that up.....

I just got a phone call from AAMI re: my wifes insurance for her new Forester... to make sure we were happy.Whilst on phone I asked for a quote for my Zed. I'm 28, but my wife isn't 25 till October, they said that the car is listed in their Database as needing to be over 25 to insure with them. And mine is an Australian Delivered NA.
Needless to say, I told them I would pass on going any further with the quote.Interesting. Baff.

Chris, you have a few options

    * Put it in your parent's name to reduce yearly premium* Find the insurer with the lowest age excess* Ask the insurer if they will increase the claim excess to reduce the premium* If Comprehensive is too expensive (which it will probably be), at least get 3rd party to cover damage to anyone else (don't be offended, but a TT and a young driver can be an expensive combination in a crash) Nobody intends to have an accident, but the last thing you want at your age is to have a huge debt over your head from wiping out a merc or roller. Don't laugh- it happens ...* Buy the best Alarm/Immobiliser possible. (Don't skimp ... it's false economy) I'd recommend at least a Brant immobiliser (but Chili may disagree ;))Anyway, just my thoughts. One thing for sure, after owning 42 cars and having my fair share of high speed bingles, I would not step into a TT zed without at least 3rd party insurance. (and b4 anyone asks, I'm only 42yo- not 85)8D

i got a quote from just cars

    hey
i asked for a quote from just cars and for a 3rd party insurance for a z31, it costs 390 a year and for a 3rd party plus fire and theft, it costed 690. i dunno how good this is as its my first quote and i got no idea about the cost of insurance.

    thanks...

you guys helped a lot, but i still dont know what to do. i think ill end up putting it under my parents name. on the other hand, i can go with the easy, but dumb option, and get no insurance at all. for the last 3 yrs ive been driving a company car, not mine, and it had no insurance for me. no accidents or any blemishes. however, i dont wanna jinks myself and once i get the TT wreck it. i think its time to get some quotes. oh, also, when you first get insurance, how do you pay? i mean, do you pay the whole amount up front, or monthly or what? thanks.LaterZ

It depends on the insurance company.....

on how you pay. Some do allow you to pay monthly or quaterly. RACV does, but dont even ask them because a TT is an import and they dont insure Imports. I am with Shannons and I pay monthly, so you can try them. Although, when younger I found shannons to be really expensive and they are quite "selective" on who they insure. Now that I'm over 25, their price is much more reasonable. Justcars however does not allow you to pay monthly or quaterly. They want the cash all upfront. Thats hard sometimes. Thats why I changed to shannons. Also, shannons is prepared to cover my car for a lot more than Just Cars and has a much cheaper excess. Seriously though dude, you wont find cheap insurance anywhere for a 21 year old, No Rating driving a TT. I wish you luck in your quest..:)

Chris .. get some form of ins cover ... hey?

An underpowered company car and a TT zed (which I think you have your heart set on - given your replies in the 'Wanted' forum) are totally different beasts...It's not about jinxes ... just statistics. You're in the highest risk category for insurance and with 225KW at your disposal ... well...Some insurers allow monthly payment but you generally pay more overall. Suncorp in Qld (ph 13 11 55) allows monthly payment and will insure Grey imports - not sure about the Vic location though ...I don't know of any other insurer who will cover sub25 drivers, can anyone else help?Good luck and at least think about getting some form of cover ???

    I got a fairly

good deal for my J-Spec N/A Z. I went through Allianz full comp, got the car when i was 20 i started by paying $3000 per year its now dropped to $2,300 after 1 year. I had no rating when i got the car. My excess is suprisingly low - so maybe check them out and see what they can come up with for you.

    Good Luck.

    90% sure about this decision...

I think im gonna get the insurance under my parents name. It looks like my only option, unless i wanna pay a rediculous amount of insurance costs. Blazeit, thats a fair amount to pay for NA, imagine a TT . I thank you guys for all your help, I'll keep you in touch with this topic and how my hunt for a zed is going.
    Thanks.

D'oh you got that unbeatable Zed itch!

Getting it in your parents name, the costs will likely still be based on the youngest driver.I would just get a more low key car to build up your insurance rating under your own name.   Thats what I should of done for my old 260z. Opps when I got that @ the age of 19, alot of the insurance co's didn't want to take me on until I was 21. So I went without insurance then and never bothered about it for 7 years. Thankfully nothing bad happened to the car or me.If I got insurance when I was 21, I would be enjoying cheaper rating 1 rates today on my new 300zx.Hey shannons even asked me over the phone what my previous car was, so yeah makes me look more like a zed fanatic :-Z

    Unique idea?

Heya,      An idea sprang to mind the other day when I was thinking of insurance. If u really want the power of a TT, but not the insurance costs, pull the VG30, and bung in a VQ (?) from a 350Z. Its aspirated puts out same power as the VG30DETT, not sure about torque tho. Power of a TT with insurance of a N/A. Of course, an engine from a 350Z will be expensive to come across, and I have no idea whether or not it will fit in a 300ZX...

    Insurance company wont care...

a fast car is a fast car regardless if its a TT or NA. Also, I forsee many problems with doing what you have suggested. :)Cheers
