december 97 but now we're splitting hairs :D

what about getting a nice vert & dropping a TT or a v8 in it?
Or get ben/blipman to track you down a nice super low mileage car in japan. Have a hunt on the new j-spec website, lots of really nice cars available through dealers let alone auction.

    cheers, tim

I may be able to help you out

I have enrolled in uni (again) doing a BA in Japanese. After 1 year of study in Australia (should be starting july 2010) I would be looking to go and live in Japan (again) for 1 year. Now this isnt 100% confirmed and there are a few of variables I need to clarify with the Au University.

Now this would allow me to be a mule for a 1999 or 2000 model zed (or any other car for that mater) under the Private Import Scheme. Also as I have a wife who is a Perm Resident of AU, I think one can be done in here name also.

It would involve me buying the car in my name, registering it, insuring it, have a parking permit for it (yes you need one over there) etc etc and doing this for a period of 12 months. Then I can apply to bring it into Australia as a personal possession, then import approval is given, slapping it on a ship, getting it through customs/quarantine and then registering it. There is no complaince required for cars imported as a personal possession. Once its regoed it can be sold. By sold I mean for 1 dollar or someother amount that is a credible (ie there is stamp duty payable on car sales) so the figure on paper would have to be something more believable.

So when i have a 2000 model TT in AU in mint condition I wont entertain offers under 40K. :D:D:D

Note that the Personal Import Application requires you to supply a copy of every page of your passport. Why would they need that you might ask?

In my case they declined a Personal Import on my UK Zed on the basis of the business trips I took out of the UK (including back to Aus every 6 weeks or so). DOTARS declared that the car was "not in continual use" and therefore not eligible for a Personal Import.

So don't go touring out of the country too often. I'll start saving for the Zed.

    hmmm

I know why they ask that I have the guide and requirements. You could wind the clock to show kms over what the invoice says then wind it back once its rego ed in AU?

A second pass port can be really handy sometimes

Here is another TT 99 Auto, 42000 Km Link

Sorry, they thought of that. Bureaucrafts might be boring, nit-picking introverts, but they ain't dumb. :)

When I imported my Zed, I used the purchase price and freight cost for duty and GST purposes and they were happy. But if they look at the car and don't like your number, they reserve the right to get an independant "expert" valuation at your expense.

    not so sure

They can only ask to see your non AU passport if they know you have one... Countries dont disclose list of their citizens to other countries. In Japan its illegal to have more than one passport/nationality after the age of 20 (legal adult) the only way the know of its existance is if you show them or its public information.

Dont know how they get a market value on a 2000 zed in AU, since there is no market.

Ok, so I am sticking me neck out here, as I haven't done this myself, BUT the reference says it can be done.

See here and here. According to this, ALL 96+ zeds can be imported under SEVS.

have a search for posts by blipman (creator of forum & vehicle importer).
4 seaters have to be post '96 due to aus sales up till that point. Ben has said the issue with the '98+ models is that legislation changed from this point & the car needs a second airbag & further crash testing.

perhaps this has since changed (he or another importer would be the best to ask) however regardless you still need a workshop in australia to do the ground work to be able to comply them.

Shoot ben an email at j-spec or one of the many highly recommended importers on sau.

    cheers, tim

I've been tossing up selling mine for the last 24 months. I've just spent a sh!tload on parts to convert it to a manual.
Now she is giving me grief without starting more often than not. Once I get to the bottom of it (I suspect flooding on start-up), I may be serious about selling.

The SEVS links make it clear that the 2+0 can be 1989 up to 1998 (which may well mean Dec '97),and the 2+2 can be from Oct 1996 till the end in 2000.

    Nissan 300ZX 2 Seat Z32 1989 1998

    Nissan 300ZX 4 Seat GZ32 10/1996 Current

However, in that body of text in Vader's first link is this important little clause:

"The fact that a vehicle is included on the Register of Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles does not guarantee it will be able to gain approval to be plated. A vehicle may not be able to satisfy specific ADR requirements even though it meets the requirements set out for eligibility on the Register."

If I was going to import a very late model Z, I would be asking for written clarification from my registration authority that the vehicle would be registerable before spending any dollars. Tim's comments about the second airbag may be significant. That said, my Aussie made Magna, built in 2000 and first registered in 2001 has only a drivers airbag ....

What about all the 2+2's that are earlier models 89-95? Or is that something to do with that they were imported before they became 15 yrs old?

2+2 models were sold by Nissan in Australia up till late 1996.

"Eligibility starts 10/1996 due to the vehicle being previously supplied to the Australian market in Full Volume by Nissan under CPA 8239."

Because of that, imports of 2+2s made prior to Oct 1996 is not allowed. It appears that for the purposes of SEVS they have not differentiated between the NA and the TT, which they did do before the 15 year rule stopped and SEVS happened.

However, under the heading "model code", they only list GZ32 for the 2+2. I think a 2+2 TT model is GCZ32, which gives some scope for discussion with the SEVS people, although when opening up entry 012/00, it does list both NA and TT motors.

It's the povo way of getting more fuel into the engine. They are likely mounted in the intake pipes before the throttles. It's what they used to do 15 years ago when you couldn't buy bigger injectors.

That car is overpriced IMO. 250K on it too... Didn't even have the decency to clock it :p

Yeh 250K's is alot for that price. You can import a real 1996 TT for that much, with a lot less kms. Still not a bad looking car at the right price. Give it a month or two on the market and he will be more negotiable.
