Just want to confirm this is my problem. Replaced the ignition barrel on an automatic with an ignition from a manual. Starts and runs fine but the automatic shifter doesn't change smoothly from park to drive etc. This would be the manual barrel yeah?... noticed the original had an extra two wires going into it. Egg
is the solenoid on the auto shifter still releasing when you press the brake pedal with ign on? Quite sure the ign gets the signal from the shifter. In that you cant turn the ign to off and pull the key without being in park.... not the other way around. Have an Auto TT ign thats been converted to Manual. Different keys throughout car, and going to put my spare full lock set in it, so you are welcome to it...... except Im leaving in under 1hr for 3 weeks
It's just... ...."chunky" for want of a better term. Have to use some effort to get it from park into drive. Key can be removed in any position now.
With ign on, can you physically hear the solenoid in the shifter clicking when you depress the brake pedal? Is shifting out of park smooth when you press the bypass rod on the base of the shifter at the front? If not, disassembly of the centre console will reveal the solenoid. Can do a trial removing it to see if it frees it up or not. Would have to check the schematic, but with the way a properly functioning setup works, it indicates that the 2 wires that your manual barrell is missing is for a key release solenoid, in that it receives a signal, not transmits it. Either way, youre welcome to my barrell...... if you can wait. Car was an Auto converted to a manual. Key isnt an original 300zx however, so cant guarantee, nor have time to check at the moment, if its an auto or not, sorry.
No rush Still trying to get a silver drivers door rather then fix the damage. Car's locked in a friends shed for now.
