    Hi All.

Finally got Toshi down to Melbourne for a tune, I'll give you all the short version.

My car's an AUSSPEC NA, 1990, Headers, Pod Filter, Exhaust, Nistune chip (was "stock" chip)

He spent probably 5-6 hours on the car, doing different runs in different gears, adjusting the ECU programming and retesting.

I've driven it for a few days since, and must say I'm very happy with the results. It's much more responsive, across a broader rev range, with more torque, power and performance. :D

The lacklustre performance sub 2,500 RPM is gone as is the running out of breath around 6,000 RPM - it pulls strongly from really low revs all the way to 7,200 RPM. The tune is set up that pottering around is a mild tune - economy and drivability. Put the foot down and that changes.... nicely....

So far, the economy hasn't been scary (and I've been using that extra power too!).:br:

All up - good job Toshi, and thanks!

PS: I still get a chuckle thinking about this - during the testing we were pulled over for a routine by the Police. Toshi was driving at the time through some hills - I had to point out the flashing lights were for him to pull over:eek:. Very funny with laptop, exhaust sensors and tuning gear hanging all over the place! Good fun explaining that one! They checked things out and then went on their way....

no surprise. a properly tuned car should be more economic than a stock tune.

good work boys, pardon my ignorance but i gotta ask, who is toshi?

Toshi is the "rent-a-nistune" programmer that makes his living by tuning peoples cars that have Nistune boards.

Very good reviews so far. And honestly. A well thought out marketed business.

Google his reputation and you'll soon find hes getting pretty popular among the forums.

To the OP. Seems an odd thing to warrant getting done on a NA, but never less its always bound to be an improvement.

Which headers/extractors are you using if you dont mind my asking?

Briefly read on the other thread. $500 for the install and setup. $450 for tune without modding the ecu.

    But i doubt that's gospel.

    Why do people think that?
I like the NA's linear response, no lag, and as this is my daily driver for the peak hour battle, it's the perfect tool. Yes, it's not ultimately as fast as a TT, but it's VERY reliable, predictable and isn't beaten by too many other cars - and in peak hour I would argue more responsive than a TT, it goes around corners just as well as a TT would, and it gets off the line quickly. There's times I think I'd like a TT, but I'm quite happy with the car - It still puts a smile on me dial!

Toshi did verify beforehand saying the gains on an NA are more modest, but I can tell you it's nicely quick now. I may get a dyno for interest sake, but I never cared about the numbers so much - more about how it goes on the road for real.

The headers were TTZ's, with the HPC coating from a GB. Exhaust is stainless steel with Mangnaflow's from GB.

Would be interested to see what it runs at the drags.

Thanks Mike - Totally agree, but a car tuned for more performance generally suffers on economy - can't have your cake and eat it too as they say.

I was just highlighting (for everyone else's education?) I was happy that with what Toshi did, it's almost got two tunes. One for lower rev's and throttle, and a very different tune outside of that.

As I said to Toshi - If I'm pottering around gently (say Westgate Freeway in peak hour ), I don't want it drinking heavily for nothing. If I put the boot in (say the traffic light Grand Prix), I obviously am more interested at the point in performance, not so much the economy.... :D

My car already had the Nistune chip (GB Again). The tune cost $475. A bit more than normal in Sydney, but he had to travel to Melbourne. The price depends on how many cars he can tune in the trip, given the costs to travel. For example that price wouldn't be achievable for one car in Melbourne.

He did spend a long time on it. I never got the impression he was hurrying up to finish quickly and short change me. We even drove probably 80K's looking for big hills (it's not hilly where I live!).

Why do people think NA zeds are so slow?

They are great and fun to drive, and are quite capable of showing up a lot of turbo'd vehicles.

people who don't know zed's often don't believe my NA 2 seater is non turbo. and it really does not have that many mod's just fixed a lot of things since I got her 4 years ago =]

Because they've never driven one, likely only ever TT's... and before they all start jumping up and down, no ones saying NA's are as fast as TT's but they're definitely responsive and still fun to drive...

Sorry mate i didnt mean to sound like im a trumpeting turbo fan on the band wagon. As we're in no different of boat than yourself. All the zeds we've had are NA. So im not disregarding the efforts that you've taken to squeeze every bit the engine has to give. Improving its economy and linear power band. If anything i applaud you as most dont worry. With the usual mods, exhaust and lightened running gear, thats what most people leave it at. Not bothering with the extra coin of getting Nistune or other aftermarket tunes.

Our current zed has some sort of aftermarket tune to which is quiet good and fun to drive, but its the extras that ive concentrated on in getting it better than stock/mild.

After all the years though, we've come to the conclusion that for what its worth. We're bolting on some turbos and giving it the beans. Was planning on rebuilding the NA and building custom exhaust manifolds and trying to get everything up the new specs. But after owning a turbo 720 ute and a turbo Impreza. We thought it only fair that the zed be turbo too. After all its our proud and joy.

So i apologize if i came across as a person saying you're time wasting with an NA. It wasnt the case at all.

Best of luck with it all.

Sorry, I'm porbably overly sensetive to that at times. My Bad. There's a guy at work who always cr*ps on about the Turbo Skyline he used to own. Turbo this, Turbo that. I've been in it - it was fast, but wouldn't say it was that much different to my car. His was dyno'd at 136RWKW. I reckon that's pathetic for a turbo - Jedi77's old NA would blow it away. I reckon he probably wouldn't get away from mine either.

I was never going to spend big bucks on it (engine rebuilds etc) - if I was that serious I'd get the Turbo or a V8. No offence to the people who want to go that far the the VG6DE, but not for me.

This tune was pretty much the last thing "on the list" performance wise. I just have to now get the interior trim fixed (vinyl bubles on doors in heat, rear quarter trims need love), and finish the Carputer installation (auto power on with car, hands free on phone and dash surround touch up)

Now of course, if anyone has a TT conversion kit they want to donate, I wouldn't say no either ;)

Are you going to turbo your NA motor, or put in a TT motor?

Both my NA and srb2no's old NA have both beaten stock/mild gtst skylines without trouble. Like a certain auto gtst at the drags that couldn't run faster than 15.2

sbe, my car has beaten a friends friend, 180rwkw(with dyno papers) r33 gts-t on multiple runs

this was to settle a constant argument between him and my friend who had a na auto, and got destroyed by him

I finally silenced this guy =], I usually don't like to get into that sort of stuff or even argue with people about it.

but yeah, felt nice to knock him down a few inches after all the crap he was constantly talking, I think he has beaten just about every car in the world except for a NA zed ;)

just ignore the crap, coming from some one who's owned 2 r32 gts-t skyline's personally and now own's an NA, my NA is not far off my last gts-t, the power delivery is completely different though.
