I think my Z is only running on 5 cylinders, How do you know if it is happening
what would the signs be? , Should I stop driving my Z?I was thinking that would be a good idea. What kind of damage will it be doing to my engine?
would back firing when going through the gears be a Sign?
hope some one can help me out ASAP.
    cheers Ben:zlove:

some signs would be having a different sound to the motor, the car shaking and rumbling around.

odds are its just a bad connection with your coil packs.

Have you read this article from the tech section? Misfire testing

Also, if you have access to a consult cable and Nissan Datascan you can perform the cylinder shutdown tests to determine which cylinder isn't firing. Someone in your area might be able to help you out there.

Running on 5 means your turbo is f*cked!

Ben, I'd say your turbo has had it. Going to cost you big time I'm afraid, sorry to be the one to brake you the news... NOT!

It is easy to tell you are running on 5. The idle will be low and rough, and you'll notice a lack of power.

I'm guessing one of your injector plugs has come loose, or a coilpack connector. Quick way to check which cylinder is not firing is by pulling the coilpacks plugs one at a time, if there is no change when pulling one, you know that is the non-firing cylinder.

    5K1TZX Its all never ending....

My Z usually just pops off a connector

to the coilpacks...its not unusual for them to get brittle and loose their grip.

Usually happens to cly number 1 or 3 for me when I hit the limiter. Car runs very very ruff and idle is lumpy and low...when under load it sounds like a rusty VB Commodore hahg....but yes Jono's test would be the first thing I would do.

Alternative test method if you don't want to get your hands dirty, use datascan to turn off one cylnder at a time.
If turning off a particular cylinder makes no difference, then that cylinder is not firing.

    i had this problem

I bought my car and drove it on 5cyl for about 2weeks and stupidly thrashed it a bit and it was all good as far as i know the main problem which i had was the transistor pack which sits opposite your CAS its a sqare thingy

also yer basicly as mentioned above a lumpy idle bad responce deeper sounding engine exhaust note

DONT DRIVE YOUR CAR LIKE THIS COZ U WILL BURN OUT YOUR CATALACTIC CONVERETER WHICH CAN BE A GOOD THING LMAO

also u will notice ur 02 or what ever the sensor is called thats screwed into your cat well that will trigger a light to come on the dash its probably a light you havent seen b4 but that will indicate that your cat or cats are to hot this will come on after more than halfhour of driving when this comes on your cats are over the recomended max running tempriture so when this light is on your cats are cooking prob glowing i now this coz i burnt mine out :D

they are cooking because that fuel from the missfiring cylnder is burning at the cats because thats were the heat is most and thats were it is burning that unburnt fuel which makes it too hot

Sounds like a cross between a WRX and a Diesel Truck.

A stuffed PTU can cause it to run on 5 cylinders.

It did with mine. I put in a series 2 PTU and all fixed.

    LOL
Don't know about you Lloyd, but I disagree with this
Ceramic cats can melt and block the exhaust. I had this happen in a previous car and as a result cracked a head.

    Yeah Greg,
I suspect the Technical merit of this post is about equal to the Literary merit.:p:bash::zlove:

Blocked Cats give you plenty of time to re-think the decision NOT to replace them(not sure if that applies to "CATALACTIC CONVERETERS" though).:rolleyes:

If your catalytic converters get blocked don't worry, a catalaxative will sort it out.

I have dishonoured my family by not contributing positively to this thread. I am shamed.

Thanks for the help peoples!!! :)

Thanks for the info peoples. I took the car to the Mechanic today, and told him to check the PTUs and coils so hopefully that is all it is. But yeah My car does sound like WRX crossed with a diesel truck. I am not happy about it :( . I hope it isnt major , otherwise will have wait a while before I can put the BEET kit on:( .
anyway thanks again, fingers crossed it is only minor.
    cheers Ben
