Hi Guys, One day in the future I would like to purchase a 98+ spec gearbox. If you have one can you comment on what it's been like? I mean, gear changes are nice and smooth? How long have you had it? no grinding? etc. Thanks!!
I destroyed 3 gearboxes on the track in 3 years, I have had a 98 spec in now for 1 year with no issues apart from the low level ability of the driver.
Driving around the streets mine feels no different to the 89 gearbox it replaced which had noisy bearings.
Interesting. My gearbox was apparently rebuilt but it grinds into 2nd. As long as I hit boost before I shift into 2nd then it's fine.
You guys should try driving a Jag with the Moss crash (non synchro 1st) box. It's an art changing from 1st to 2nd but very satisfying when you master it. I have to change the zed 3rd to 4th a bit like the Jag though.
The major difference is that the 98+ gearbox has more durable syncro rings. If you have a pre 98 gearbox with syncro rings in good condition then the shift will be the same as the 98+ gearbox. The syncro rings in the 98+ gearbox will however be able to handle more abuse. If would recommend purchasing a 98+ gearbox instead of rebuilding a pre 98 gearbox but don't expect anything more than a new gearbox that will last longer.

Apart from the second to third gate mod I find them no better than a correctly functioning older style. It's simply a matter of comparing one with 20+ years of service and a new item, chalk and cheese.
I've had worn out, rebuilt, and new. I agree there'd be no benefit to the driver comparing a new series 1 to a new series 6 box, but even a rebuilt series 1 box still has some "character". I'm very happy with the move to a new one.
