First it was the passenger side cam sprocket and that was replaced with a 2nd hand stock one and now im hearing the other one making noises. What should i do? Is this common...i heard it happens due to new springs..etc

did they clean or replace your old lifters?

If not its probable that is the ticking noise.

how much have you had it running? Cam sprokets are commonly noisy but the noise is a bit more harsh. Lifters are more of a tick

It might be a bomb! :p

Probably a sticky lifter, next oil change maybe put some engine flush through it. Always worked for my Z31.

Are they new cam sprockets or the old ones. Did you put new VVT springs in. These are keep and worth putting in to stop this sort of noise from the cam sprockets. The heavier JWT ones are the go.

i had the same tick in mine.. it was the lifters not getting enough oil, but it didnt matter how much flushing i put through, it still ticked, cleaned the lifters... this didnt fix it either...

i had a dint in my sump which stopped the pick up from getting the oil up into the engine.. once this was fixed, sound went away... so if u put the oil thinner through ur engine and it doesnt fix it.. id be looking at the sump and the pick up.

I've heard that some knowledgeable people jack the car up on the sump, causing a dent in it...metal shavings bad!!!

They may quiet down after a run in period.

I have had some lifters finally go quiet after around 1.5 hours of run time, engine was built by a sydney workshop and had obviously sat for some time. Usually they will shut up after 20mins and a couple of starts.

Cam gears will usually only rattle on decel and definately not continuously. Verify you actually have oil pressure by fitting a master guage, dented sumps are very common, also if the engine used a new pick up tube, the late style doesn't have an o'ring and must be sealed with RTV, easily ovelooked by a novice.

On the matter of JWT VTC springs and rattle, they are a cover up for the problem and definately not a fix, the rattle is caused by wear on the helical spline and thrust face inside the gear. Fitting heavy duty springs only dampens the correct operation of the gear. Read up on Brett Dempsey's site about the correct way to fix gear rattle.
