Hey folks, I'm in the middle of removing all the EGR components and i'm stuck at undoing this fitting It's thouroughly giving me the shits let me tell you. I've tried a few methods, i've got fairly limited spanners in that kind of size, but it seems 21mm is too big and 20 too small. And I don't have any imperial sizes this large to try. I've hit it with WD for 3 days straight before attempting to undo it, and space is the other problem. Maybe if I can get the correct size spanner it will get enough leverage on it. I even cut a slot in a 20mm ring spanner to slip over the pipe but it would not go on the nut. Any ideas? And yes i'm already considering pulling the engine TIA Ben
Try using a monkey wrench if you can get it in there. I removed mine with the engine out, so much easier, looks rusty Ben, maybe apply heat??
when i removed my egr i tried to remove this bolt but could never do so. i ended up just getting the angle grinder out and cutting off the tubes that go to the plenum. bit dodgy but i found it practically impossible to remove that egr bolt.
You need to cut the pipe off first. Then use an impact socket on a breaker bar. That will get it out no probs
have u tryed undoing it after running the motor for 2 mins? O2 sensors come out real easy when hot this should be the same. Regards Trev
If your engine is not going to be useing the egr again, cut it off and use a ring spanner. Take the threaded end off the pipe to warburtons, pertik ect, and get a bung. If your planning on removing the whole thing with the engine in, cut all the pipes off as close to the egr as possible, otherwise its a bastard off a job.
That was my first idea, but then I thought wouldn't half the metal fileings from the cutting drop into the exhaust housing of the turbo? I assumed this would be bad that's all. Ben PS, what exactly is an impact socket?
Tell me about it, took me about 2 hours just to undo the 2 bolts that hold on the egr diaphram. Basically i've got the whole system disconnected except for this one fitting. And yeah it's not going back on that's for sure. Ben
Good luck. I tried removing this with the engine on a stand and couldn't get it. In the end I took it off with the dump.
thats just lazy... dont take it off.. you need to plug it up anyway... jut cut the pipe and seal the pipe up
it wont make that much fileings from cutting this pipe, its how i did it. once you have cut the pipe do as graham said... once you have the bolt, weld it up and put it back in place
ok thanks chaps, sounds like the go. Just out of curiosity, can anyone remember offhand what size nut it is? I'll find out soon enough though I guess. Ben
The nut is a tapered thread. Its not a bolt you need to put back in. Suggest you weld up the plug after you take it out then screw it back in afterward.
Yeah sorry I meant bolt/fitting not nut. It's the spanner/socket size I was after that's all I'll have a crack at it tomorrow. Ben
I found once you've removed the EGR off the back of the plenum, you can grab that end of the pipe and work it up and down which breaks the seal between the pipe and the fitting - which loosened it enough to get it out with a normal spanner...can't remember what size it was though
Plenty of WD40 and a pair of small pointy nosed vise grips worked on my car. I might have been lucky though as mine wasnt done up that tight.
SUCCESS!! lol Thanks to all for your assistance. I finally got it all off. In the end it wasen't in that tight at all, it's just about getting leverage in the limited space available. I didn't have anything suitable to use to cut the pipe that would fit in the space required so I used a long screw driver as a centre punch to make a flat spot on the pipe just above the fitting. Then drilled a large hole through the pipe. This weakened it to the point where I could just snap it off. Then I just used the right socket (ended up being imperial which is weird) and only used a 3/8 ratchet and it came right out. I can only pray that the rest of the jobs on the list go alot smoother. Fingers crossed.... however I expect they will all be a PITA in one way or another Ben
