hey need help... trying to do the impossible and removeturbos without pulling out the donk. can get to the passenger one and have two bolts to go. one flippen tricky one. but its that hard drivers side turbo wandering if anyone has succesfully removed the drivers side turbo and gotten it back in? if anyone knows help would be much aprreciated as to pull them out myself and rebuild them is alot cheaper then having a mechanic do it. thanks

I don't think there is any easy way of doing it with engine in mate .
Best way would be just to drop the box etc and lift the motor out , don't really have to move it out of engine bay , just enough so you can get at the turbos ...
    then drop it back in
    good luck

4 hours to do a engine pull by yourself. or 15 hours and destroyed hands and knuckles.... pull your engine dude

    AndyMac Better than you

Remove the turbo's with the manifolds, much easier than trying to get at the 2 rear bolts.

And unless your freaking good at this stuff, your not going to get the drivers side turbo out. You either remove the plenum and drop the motor and subframe enough to grant access or you pull the motor out entirely. It's advised to pull the motor, not only for ease of the job, but also it's a great opportunity to replace all the tricky cooling lines while it's out.

I've pulled both turbos without pulling the engine. Next time I'll pull the engine.

Once you remove the brake master cylinder, the driver side turbo isn't much worse than the passenger turbo.

Which two bolts are you stuck with? One of the nuts holding the turbo, I had to use a 1/4 inch drive socket (but I needed to remove the oil drain first). The other nuts holding the turbo on, I used a slightly ground ring spanner.

    rockchucker WTF???

I started it once. Never again. Pull the Engine and you will save time in the long run. You will be able to check all of the usual hoses and lines that go bad after 20 years of hotter than hell Engine temperatures.

Don't get me wrong...It can be done. It is a lot easier and you can get everything tightened up a whole lot better though by pulling the Engine though.

no have not yet. so it is possible to remove turbos without pulling the motor because that part sounds a bit daunting and the two bolts on the passennger side near the engine mounte I think it is. and you get the drivers side turbo from the top???

its not hard mate just lable all the conectors and hoses and you cant go wrong :)

Mine is all ready to come out with the gearbox, I just need to borrow a engine crane so I can pull it out

Its possible. Had a customer did it him self under the car. Been told he removed the crossmember, gear box, forced engine from side to side with wood. After installation he said engine removal was a eaiser.

(found water leak behind engine few days later. lol)

how do you get to the mountings? and do you have to take most of the accesorys off arouund the motor?

It's a while since I did it so I can't remember exactly how I reached every nut or bolt. The driver side turbo you access some from the top and some from the bottom (much like the passenger side) but you need to remove the brake master cylinder to get the necessary access to the top.

Pulling the engine might sound daunting but it is simpler and easier than removing the turbos with the engine in.

You need more than a basic socket set to do either.
