Evidently you don't have to take the dash out - but having done the heater core change, I honestly don't know how you could do it with the dash in. I don't know how you can get to the bastard bolt through the holes in the firewall that the heater pipes go through while the heads are still on the block.

The dash-out article is for a LHD car btw, so you don't have to mess around with the ECU in our cars. If you have a manual transmission, it's easier to get to the heater core if you remove the clutch pedal (4 nuts, 1 bolt, 1 split pin).

Heater core is the same as is in a Mitsubishi Mirage (post 1994 model) Cost is $185. Look-up http://www.autoheat.com.au/ check both Nissan 300ZX and the Mitsubishi Mirage and you'll see they're the same part no.

If you do take the dash out, suggest you take lots of photos to help with where all the bolts and electrical connectors go during reassembly.

The 8mm bastard bolt that holds the 2 pipes that go through the firewall in place in the back of the heater box really is best undone with a swivel head ratchet ring spanner, although you can remove it with a small open ended spanner an eighth of a turn at a time.

Good luck whichever way you do it. Just take your time.

    Cheers,

    Peter
