Hey guys just have to ask im looking to get my own zed..

last time i joined because my old man bought a Z and i loved them since but since he didnt use it much he sold his a few months back ill post a pic up later

last zed we had was TT no room in the engine bay thats what was the worst but it was ok

i found a nice cheap Z to suit my needs

just had to ask my dad is an old skool mechanic but just before i run it through him i was looking at a zed with a blown head gasket ..

now i was thinking it was a Cheap TT so i was looking into buying that and working on it with the old man:thumbup:

    sortof a project

so yes i was looking into the costs of a Head gasket weve done a few Head gaskets but them being general cars and nothing turbo or sporty i was looking for some help

i know it all depends on how much damage was done but still

    recond the heads? 300 each?
    head gasket 150?
    leaks?

the cars done 12*ks and suits my price bracket for now and is manual and suits my needs has a fair bit of mods etc.

    any thoughts?

    cheers guys

Its a fair bit of work, if you can do the work yourself then great.

If i were you though id keep an eye out for a well maintained zed without engine probs, unless this one your looking at is at a super low price.

Zeds are getting cheap now, why not just spend the extra few k (if thats what the difference is) as it will work out cheaper in the end i'm sure!

This is sort of like asking how many woods would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck would! lol You could open it up and find out the whole internals are spoiled to shit. Or if you're lucky it could simply be a headgasket then although it's practically a rebuild still, if the parts from the engine are still good and you do the work yourself it wont be too spendy especially if u get the car for a song.

We've just replaced head gakets on a TTZED, so here are some of the figures off the top of my head:

    - Surface grind and pressure test heads $400
    - Head Gasket Kit $320
    - Head bolts (Nissan head bolts one use only) $170
    - 100k km Service Kit $700
    - Turbo Gaskets $200
    - Spark Plugs $90

By the time you add a few incidentals, you won't get any change from $2K.

If your planning on doing it in the car, then an engine crane is very usefull because the heads are very heavy with exhaust manifold and turbo attached.

those numbers all look about rite but i got my heads fully recoed for only 550 and you dont need the 100 000 km kit but it would be silly not to, same thing with the turbo gaskets . its probably worth completely rebuilding the engine while its out its not really that much more work on and new turbo cartridges as well

    seems allright ...

might get some trade places to the job cabramatta is the place to go

ill see well a TT Z for 5K in good cond sounds good at this price right with a few mods

im not into spending too much on the base car + i have peace of mind when the job is done by myself..

cheers guys ill look further into it but i think its a little to early for a Z again might look into it in a few months

    cheers

Those are "best case" prices. You could find more issues when you pull the heads off, especially if it's been sitting a while with coolant in the cylinder from the blown head gasket.

If it has been severely over heated then the block may need to be decked, the rings may have lost tension and I've recently heard of a case where the bore has gone out of round. Make sure you get a compression test to get an idea on the state of the rest of the engine.

If I were you I'd be costing up an engine rebuild so you know worst case (another $2-3k in parts and machining).

The rest of the car would need to be near perfect, otherwise I'd be offering substantially less than $5K.

Good luck, it will be a big project but there is great satisfaction in doing it yourself.

Too true. Fully reco-ed heads for example. Price 24 valves, 24 seats, 24 guides, the machining to replace the seats, the labour to replace guides, the surface grind and hours of hand porting and you get closer to $2k just for the heads. Trust me I know:cool:
