would like to know your opinion on whether or not my gearbox is gone..here are the symptoms

    1. loose shifter (ie can wiggle from side to side) when in gear
    2. loud noise in second, fourth and reverse
    3. loud noise when in neutral, disappears when push the clutch in
    4. extremely loud vibrating noise (sounds like a 'grrrrrrr') when accelerating from a lowish speed in a high gear. like when accelerating from ~50 in fourth or 35 in third, or when approaching a hill

i know that 1. and 2. can be rectified by new shifter bushings and shifter boot but what is causing 4.?

have spoken on the phone with precise auto and he reckons i should just get a new box..what do you guys think? is it fixable at reasonable price?

    cheers

First of all, of course he would...

...recommend getting a new gearbox, its the surest way of getting you to part with the maximum amount of money (I hate mechanics)
Anyway getting back to reality, as you said number 1 is fixed with new shifter bushes. 2 could be a few things, so as well as a new shifter boot try changing the gearbox oil. 3 I can almost garrantee is the thrust bearing on the clutch, and may be contributing to 2. 4 could be a buggered gearbox mount, but considering the other problems could simply be either worn out gearbox oil, or low on oil. The whole noisy gearbox issues is a little hard to diagnose over the net. If your mechanic is genuinely a good guy then he should be able to give you a more informative idea on what exactly is wrong (after actually inspecting it) and how it could be fixed before trying to convince you to get a new box if it actually needs one.
