Is there a special tool for this, because today i wanted to change my diff oil but couldn't get the plugs off. The only thing that would fit in there was the head off a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar( it wasn't a tight fit) so in fear off stuffing it up i left it. Any help would be appreciated, and the tech article is not that helpfull.
Also its not a reverse thread is it?

If it's the same size as those on the gearbox, then it is 1/2 inch drive.

Personally, i have not removed those from a diff, so perhaps best to wait for someone with experience to post.

btw, someone has previously tried unsuccessfully to remove the drain plug from my gearbox and chewed the crap out of it so that I can't get it out.:(

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

    Peter

Yes Peter it is the same as the gearbox. Definately NOT reverse threaded

These plugs I think may have been loctited in from the factory. Mine were very tight also. If there is any play with the half inch socket wrench then pack out with pieces from a tin can until all play is taken up. Make sure the socket wrench is all the way in as well. Good luck. Cheers.

Steel will be better - aluminium is soft and might distort - no want that

Only problem I had was re-filling it.

Ended up using a large plastic syringe, as used by the oil samplers at the mine I work at. Worked a treat with a 150mm lomg plasic hose extension to get past all the steer bits. took a while , only 100ml a time.

Or you could use vice grips / stillsons which I did on my friends one which

was completely rounded! As in, a pipe the same diameter as the plug would fit over it perfectly it was so round!
