hey guys, just a follow up to this thread http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=314045 took a video to record the rattle im having trouble with. although previously i had gone for a drive with vtc disconnected and couldnt hear the rattle, today i did the same thing and the rattle was still present. check out the vid http://s1086.photobucket.com/albums/j453/benwah89/?action=view¤t=IMG_0675.mp4 tell me what you reckon! cheers, John
oh and btw i had the handbrake on in the vid and was letting the clutch out to load up the engine. doesnt rattle when revving freely under no load.
Hmm hadn't considered idler pulley or altenator bearings. Or ac, or power steer pump bearings for that matter. I'll look into it. Shouldn't be anything to do with the timing belt, engine was rebuilt 2000kms ago.
Very difficult to diagnose from that video, quality is very poor. Do you have a Point & Shoot camera somewhere? Set it down near the engine bay or wherever you think the noise is coming from, hit record, go back, rev, post video. Would be glad to take a look for you but ACT is a bit out of my way, bout 3 hrs MoulaZX
Yeh sorry for the terrible quality. Only used my iPhone. When I trimmed the video it got even worse. The full length version is also on my photobucket album. It's a bit better. Sorry if I sound like a tard, but what's a point and shoot camera? as for oil pressure, I can't tell you how accurate the stock sensor/gauge is, but it mostly sits about 2, and fluctuates between 1 and 4.
Point & Shoot, fancy name for just those standard compact digital cameras, typically have a better quality microphone and since we're more interested in audio then video... Bad audio can become misleading, for example, I've got two separate videos of mine about a week apart, Phone & Camera, one makes the sound mildly annoying / serious, the other (more accurate) showed truly how bad it was. Cheers, MoulaZX
Oh ok. Yeh I don't have one of those. When driving the rattle is barely noticable, because of road noise etc. But parked in the garage it's really quite loud and harsh sounding. As I said in the last thread, the same rattle was there with my old engine. So I guess I do need to eliminate things that were kept from before such as idler pulley, altenator etc. Ideally I need to get a mate to make the rattle happen while I poke my head in around the engine bay to try and narrow down whereabouts it's coming from.
also just noticed this afternoon that with the car in gear and clutch in i can induce the rattle, however in neutral i cant any chance it could be clutch/gearbox related?
Mine does it all the time. Really quite annoying if it's the vtc shouldn't the rattle stop when the solenoids are unplugged?
Mine has a rattle like this and i thought it was the enigine, turns out its the gearbox. Synchros grinding when in neutral but when on the clutch its almost completely gone? Changed gearbox oil and it shut it up alot but its not completely gone.
mines the opposite. No rattle when in neutral, the rattle occurs when let go of the throttle, mainly when under load. When the car is in gear with the clutch in, is there a small amount of load put on the engine?
Technically yes, as you're still spinning the shaft down the gearbox, but in reality its so ridiculously small of a load it's not worth mentioning. MoulaZX
hmm so there is a possibility my rattle is gearbox/clutch related.... Any ideas what could rattle in there? I put in a new clutch and throw out bearing when I did the engine swap.
