GT28RS users - balancing & clutch question

Having a chat to a holden race team and the place that does their balancing (and doing my balancing) who have dealt with a lot of V6 holden race cars, I was told they had some experience with a VG32 crankshaft and that the holden V6 crankshafts were very similar in design as far as the balancing goes (apparently there is a whole heap of different balancing types) and when going for big power the crank has to be overbalanced by a certain percentage.

If I can work out roughly what rpm range I will be making the most power at, they can work out the exact percentage to overbalance the crank to. They said they may have to weld some type of metal (started with M) which is denser than tungsten to the crank in order to do this.

What RPM range are people with many mods a GT28RS setup making the most power?

I got word back on my clutch and it will cost just as much to rebuild as to buy a new one. I can get a twin plate ORC+lightweight fw for $2000 but does anyone else have any recommendations of a twin plate or an extremely good normal clutch (not button) that would hold 400+rwkw and a price they paid for a lightened f/w and clutch?

    Thanks :)

mine peaks at around 5700 rpm at the moment, but that is with JWT Mild cams and high flow manifolds. I plan on going to Wild cams and the Mike Smith manifolds when I can so she spools up quicker.

Thanks for the info. I guessed it would be between 5500 and 6000rpm with what I am setting up.

    Thanks again

I'd give the ORC a miss. I've heard they're fairly savage comapred to a Nismo or OS Giken. I would honestly just go for an RPS Max Street or an RPS Max 6 puck. If you plan to drag get the 6puck.

do they last? and where can i get one?

They should last a long time if you don't abuse them. Guys on TTnet have said their Max 6puck setups were lasting 100+ drag launches. I've got a Max Street + RPS flywheel setup on my car and I can tell you now it really does make the car a lot more comfortable than my old OS twin plate setup. The pressure plate is very stiff (will hold ~ 500whp) but the engagement of the organic disk makes street driving tireless.

You can get all RPS products from Specialty Z or COZ.

My GT28RS turbos make power from 3500rpm to 5500rpm.

I ran the ORC twinplate clutch for about six months on the street but took it out as it was too touchy and rattly. $1000 if you want it.

Bought the new OS STR twin plate, much nicer, still not perfect but definately street drivable, can slip it and it has travel, less rattle too. Some say you can run less than a twin plate but I am sceptical if you are putting out more than 550hp+.

You should make your clutch decision before you get your engine balanced so that they balance it with the flywheel on.

Not sure about the over balancing of the crank, when my engine was balanced they spent a lot of time adding counterweights to ensure it was perfectly balanced at high RPM, why over balance?

Does not really make sense, either it is balanced or not. If it is over balanced then it is out of balance. (i.e. I drank too many beers and over balanced )

I have no idea why, i hadn't heard of it before these guys mentioned it but I assume they would know more than what I would ever dream of knowing about balancing. It was something to do with it being perfectly balanced, that when you reach peak power it's out of balance.. or something.. I will get more info.

    You have a pm mikec.

i'm guessing it means to balance it to a higher rpm than what is required

in other words, ur running to 8krpm, and they overbalance it up to 8.5krpm
(they make sure it's close to perfectly balanced at 8.5krpm) etc

if they try to tell you that they will balance it better than 100% then i think they're pissing in ur pocket

they didn't try to tell me anything, they just said they want to get it as close as possible for my application, as they do with their race cars. They are well known, anyone into V8 supercars would know of them, so I am leaving it up to them.
