Hey all, finally got off my ass and had the gearbox i bought off a guy on this forum 3 months ago sent down.(lots of stuff happened and i had no choice but to spend the money ie payments to the government :( etc)

Anyway i've got it now and plan to replace my old gearbox in which the synchros are almost gone with this new one which is supposedly in really good condition. When i put it in i'm replacing the thrust bearing and buying a short shifter kit as its easy to do this while the gearbox is out.

Now my question is is there anything i should do to the gearbox while i have it out ???

Is a short shifter kit off ebay good or should i buy one somewhere else and how much for a good one ???

I changed the clutch when i got the car but does a lightened flywheel really help and how much does a good one cost ???

Thats about all i can think of, any suggesitons would be appreciated. Thanks

short shifters are a really opinionating topic

i have a "monsta performance" shifter of ebay bout $100 from memory probly a bit less, quite notchy but i like it personally.....definately a notchier feel than the standard shifter in almost every case ive heard of.....see if yoiu can get a drive in a zed with a short shifter installed, see if you like it.....
the short shifter can be installed with the gearbox in pretty easy,so dont stress to much if you doint do it when you drop the gearbox....
lightened flywheel is a good mod, will increas acceleration a little, and again i have one and like it....
makes the car easier to stall at low revs so you need to use slightly higher revs than stock to get away from lights without bunny hopping, but the car gets up and flys once its moving....
    hope this helps a little:D

    Re : Gearbox swap

While you have the box out I would suggest changing the rear main seal, just for "peace of mind", and fit a heavy duty clutch pivot because it's only a matter of time until the oem one breaks (especially if you have a HD pressure plate)

I would highly recommend a lightweight flywheel, it allows quicker throttle response due to less mass but if you're on a tight budget I wouldn't bother too much because a decent one will set you back about $5-600. You can have the oem one lightened and rebalanced for a slight improvement

I have a C's short shifter fitted and it really is an elaborate piece of equipment (typical japanese overkill) but at $400 (approx) you'd want it to be good. The ebay one probably does the job but there is always a question mark over cheap knockoffs. I will leave it to someone who has purchased an ebay shifter to give you an evaluation

thats me,cheap ebay knock off shifter right here....lol...see above post for opinions.....i call mine the notchmaster5000,so that should give you a rough idea......the more revs you give it,the easier it is to shift... dunno why......i like it though, its still very drivable and not to intrusive to daily driving

Cheers for that, budget dosen't stretch to a lightened flywheel or expensive short shifter. SO i'll probably get an ebay one and make do with the normal flywheel, i've got no problems with my clutch now at the monent, replaced it when i bought the car and got the flywheel machined so will probably just check both of them.
