Car Info: 300zx 1992 TT 5spd 2 SeaterThere is a slight scraping kinda noise when the gear is in 2 and 4th. In 1st, 3rd and 5th there is no noise at all only when the gear is changed to 2nd or 4th gear it makes the scraping noise.I'll try to describe the noise better
make a big smile with your teeth showing, push your tongue to the bottom of your lower jaw, then try blow out some air.I'm not trying to be funny, its the best description i can give.It seems to be coming from under the gear knob. So i assume from the gear box or something but i dont know for sure. The clutch was changed recently on the car.I know this is vague but i think if someone has come accross it they will understand. Thanks, Bye.

    souns pritty typical....

sounds like your gear stick boot cover has come off. This really needs to be in the FAQ as its so damn common.WHat you need to do is take off the centre console that surrounds the gearstick. Under the leather cover that surrounds the gearstick is another one made of rubber. It seals to a bottom piece. This is to keep out the noise (what your hearing). I suspect when they did the gearbox they didnt put it back on properly. Now whats happening is when your in 2nd and 4th your lifting the edge of this cover up and letting in the road noise. You will see exactly what I mean when you get to it. Easy fix anyway, wont cost you a cent unless the cover is torn to buggery.

    Thank You

That was very informative and easy to understand.
I am looking to buy this car. I dont actually own it yet. The current owner is trying to chase up the mechanic who did his clutch change but it seems that they are no longer a business!!!Goes to show. However i hope what you are saying is right cause this car will be mine in a few days (praying that there is nothing else wrong with it) i have to get it checked out by a mechanic here in melbourne (Spencer)Thanks once again.Angelo

    No worries....

the dead give away with these is everyone says they hear a noise in 2nd and 4th. When you take off the leather cover and see how the rubber boot fits you will see exactly why.

    Really easy, 5 minute job....

Once you know what your doing you can do inside of 2 minutes. However it can be a little harder to explain in words. If I had my car I would take you some pics to illustrate. When you want to fix it email me and I'l guide you through step by step or probably easier you can get me on windows messenger while you have the car in your garage and I'l lead you through it. There are just a few hidden screws that are the main problem.

The pics kind of give you an idea what is lurking underneath the console. Remember to push the sealing ridge down past the inner hook of the plate it seals against. Look at the rubber boot itself, just inside the bottom lip is a ridge that has to hook under the metal part. Most just think the boot pushes down on the metal part and that's it. Look a bit further into it and you will see what I mean.
