hey guys just wondering if it is bad to always fill with high octane fuel for standard injectors???

i used V-racing from shell and i see veryy big differences on my N/A....

or should this fuel fill be one off????

You sure the differences aren't in your head? Using higher octane fuel than neccessary doesn't give benefits like you describe by itself. It's just more resistant to detonation. It will allow you to run more boost or in your case more timing without detonation etc but simply using higher octane fuel than required by itself in an NA wont have much of a benefit if any. It'll help burn the hole in your wallet and contribute to excessive carbon build up though.

    red32 You talkin' to me?

As 300zxt says, running a higher octane fuel in an NA only allows more aggressive tuning without detonation, the actual vehicle performance is due entirely to the tuning. I routinely run 95RON in my NA, and when the price is too high (like now) I run it on 91RON. The car seems to cope OK with the lower rated fuel. For dyno days or the drags, I run 98 with an octane booster added. My head thinks the car goes better with this mix.

Having said that, I used to drive a '92 TR Magna (EFI, etc.). On 91RON it was a slug, on 95 Hmmm yeah, OK, but with 98RON it would actually wheelspin in 2nd and 3rd under hard acceleration. Go figure!

Fuel selection often depends on how deep your pockets are (but stay away from ethanol-added fuels unless you have late model injectors).

I cant use 91, my Z ran like crap on it when I tried just $20 worth many years ago one time I needed it when no premium was available . I use 95 daily or 98 when running increased boost and it does good. I personally steer clear of the ethanol blends for the sake of higher octane rating but rather fine tune it elsewhere for optimal performance on premium. This is of course for a street car we're talking.

Yes and no fellas. Fistly when a car is fitted with a DET sensor when its running on 91, the det sensor could be pullling the timing right back at lower speeds so even though he hasnt physically made any timing changes the car could be running with more advance.

Secondly higher octane fuel burns slower and promotes better flame travel. It does increase combustion effieciency even with the same amount of advancce.

But you are right in saying that to get the most out of it you need to bump the timing up a bit

I know hes got an NA so that'd apply to him but the detonation sensor doesn't function under boost on the ET, is this the same with DETT? Just curious...

Its bad because V racing fuel has ethanol in it, and your injectors are not designed to run ethanol and it can damage them, so dont use it too much. If you want to run high octane fuel, use ones that dont contain ethanol or look at getting your injectors changed out for ethanol friendly ones.

I find that I get a lot better fuel consumption on high octane (720km out of a tank 3 days ago!). My NA also pings on normal unleaded.

i run 98 all day every day

    TT on stock boost

ran my 180sx on the same all day every day

Have been told that anything less is bad for the car/s so never ever questioned it.

it's just shell. my zed hates shell fuel.

my zed loves shell fuel (paid $1.44 for V-Power last week wed.) but with anything else i get shit mileage:(

i use caltex vortex 98 in my na, i find it gives the best miledge and also keeps my car from pinging, as people said steer clear from ethonol fuels in old cars

it does function, but the signal is disregarded over 3000rpm

    On an NA....

the DET sensor works up to 4000 rpm, under heavy load.

Yeah same, ignored when in boost which makes it useless really. I think it's primary function is really for when stuff is all screwed up to shit and pinging its head off at low loads.
