Hi guys, Its a new year and am hoping to replace all the fluids in my zed. My zed is a 1992 Non Turbo Manual. I went around and got a few prices for the fluids as well as part numbers. The prices arent the cheapest i can get but its just for reference at this stage. I would like to know what fellow zedders think about Penrite. I have only heard good things about it and has been made for Australian conditions. I also know that Royal Purple and Motul are good brands aswell. My zed is a daily but i plan on taking it to the drags and track a few times this year. My questions basically are... 1) Would you use Penrite? Would you use anything else? If so why and what brand and what part number is it? 2) Is there any part of the zed where Sythetic fluids cannot be used like gearbox or diff or anywhere else? 3) Have i missed any fluids? 4) Is it worth paying the extra? 5) How much of each would i need for my zed? As in how many bottles or ltr's? I know of Motul and Royal Purple like mentioned but is it worth the extra $$. I got told not to use Castrol or Shell by the guys at the shop as well as a few mechanics i know. Manual Transmission - Penrite TRANSAXLE 75 75W-90 2.5L $34.99 Penrite SIN GEAR 75 75W-90 2.5L $60.99 Motul Gear 300 75W90 1L $44.99 Differential - Penrite HYPOID 80W-90 2.5L $31.99 Power Steering - Penrite Power Steering 500ml $10.99 Brake Fluid - Penrite Brake Fluid 525 Super DOT 4 500ml $9.99 Motul DOT 5.1 500ml $24.99 Engine Oil - Penrite SIN 15 15W-50 5L $69.99 Penrite HPR 15 15W-60 5L $36.99 Motul SAE 15W50 5L $59.99 I would like to anything good or bad about any of these fluids or anything better? Its not about the $$ but if im spending the extra $$ i want the extra quality and protection. Thanks in advance, Abraham
Thanks Ross...i already got told that the clutch and brake fluid can be used for either. As for coolant i already use Tectaloy 100 Plus, as i couldnt find any better...is there any better coolant? Also just confirming i can use Super DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 brake fluid for both the clutch and brakes? As it says DOT 3 on the cap in the engine bay. Abraham
i believe that dot 3,4, and 5.1 are all interchangable, its dot 5 that is silicon based and is not safe to be used in a standard z32 braking system. confirm this with the place you purchase your fluids from however.
Ross thanks again are you talking about all DOT 5 fluids? Or specifically the DOT 5.1? I shall ask the shop when i go there next if its silicon based and if it would affect my standard braking system. As the brake and clutch fluids are the same, would it be the same for using 5.1 for my clutch fluid? Abraham
brake and clutch fluid are fully interchnagable, so yes, your "brake fluid" can also be your clutch fluid. Dot 5 is different to 5.1. Dot 5.1 is the alternate version which is safe for majority of cars. Dot 5 is often refered to as race fluid if you do a search there is quite a good explanation of the various fluid types
Thanks for that...Alex's thread has been quite informative. I shall get the DOT 5.1 for both my clutch and brake fluids. Any idea on how much of all fluids does the zed take? Abraham
no idea how much they take, when i did the manual conversion on my tt i bought a 4 ltr jug of dot 4, and used well less than half id say......
Don't use power steering oil, use only dextron type auto transmission oil in your power steering system as Nissan service states.
How come? I have always used power steering fluid...Isnt power steering fluid meant to be used in your power steering? Abraham
thanks to chili and bob lloyd jones, was not aware of the power steering fluid trick with our cars! one to watch out for thats for sure
I dont have a service manual. I have already purchased power steering fluid but can return it. What exactly do i get instead? Any specific brand or type? When i had to serviced a while back they used power steering fluid, so any damage done by this? Thanks guys, i really didnt know about this and just assumed that when it says power steering it would take any power steering fluid. Thanks Abraham
Well I didn't know this either, I just topped up a little bit of PS fluid into the PS reservoir about a year again and I haven't noticed anything wrong at all with my PS functionality. I must be one of the lucky ones I guess. Also Abraham why did the shop say don't used Castrol. I've used it since I brought my Z and haven't had any problems yet. Just want to know what they said about their oils.
Thanks Egg Adam i never had an issue either with using power steering fluid...the guys at all 3 shops i went to said the same exact thing about Shell and Castrol. They said that basically they are not made for Australian environments and it is not the best oil for any car driven in Australia. Hence why i got a high recommendation for Penrite or even Nulon. Using it might wear out the engine more and not protect it enough...basically both Shell and Castrol are good brands but just not for Australian conditions. Kind of like the under plenum hoses which are only good in Japan and hence why everybody deletes them so it doesnt stuff up our engines hope that made sense and helps Abraham
Thanks mate, I was planning to change the oil I use to one recommend by members on the forums but just brought what I normally buy. Ill go and buy some Penrite SIN 15W40 when I do my next oil change. Thanks for the advice.
