    Hi All,

I want ot fit a tow bar to my NA DD. It's for general use, e.g towing a 6x4 trailer to take stuff to the tip, for a bicycle rack etc, nothing too heavy.

    I have found this article.

    http://www.pexcom.com.au/z32cms/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.224

I would also like to remove the gooseneck when not in use.

Is this approach heavy duty enough? Does anyone have anything to add wrt extra strength, alternative way to mount/fit etc.

    Cheers,

    Peter

I'm sure pexzed will have advice on the best towbar to get and yes it will need to be removed when not being used.... just send him a pm bout it...

I've had one fitted to my blue beast. it's basically the same arrangement as the one in that tech article. Mine's rated for about 1000kg towing capacity. Main thing is the chasis rails aren't overly strong so that's the only real drawback and poventing a higher towing capacity.

But mine towed my Jetski fine, it even towed a car trailer with my old Minivan on the back of it!

Yes Baz, i did. We had a conversation about this topic on sunday after lunch...filled us in on details - therefore having to choose the right one etc...lets just say ... that doesnt block your number plate!

    Excellent, would like to see.

    Benny,

1000 kgs would be fine. So just fitting as in the Tech Article can allow 1000kgs? Did you use a Haymen Reese tow hook?

    Cheers,

    Peter

Yeah Pete, i believe you can. but you'll just have to fabricate up the mounting bracket to suite sufficient bolting onto the 2 side rails of the chassis just behind the fuel tank(assuming it's a 2+2), and also along the rear frame that joins the two side rails for extra support.

Mine is the same "tongue" setup as Pex's where you bolt it on with 2 bolts. Then when not used, just unbolt the two bolts in the tongue and slide it off not to be seen.
Except mine goes in through where the number plate is (flip the number plate up and slide the tongue in, then fold the number plate back down over top.
Where as Pex's comes from underneith the rear bar.

Do I need to get it engineered?

DinoZ Talks sh#t for a living.

You need to check the ACT regs. In NSW you have to be licenced to build the bar, same as with trailers. These sort of issues usually don't pop up until there is an accident and then the insurance company come looking for ways not to pay. You may find that an engineer is not able to certify a home made bar.
