I put a in line noise filter in and it reduced the noise significantly . I'm going to try snipping my earth wire and connecting it elsewhere to ground to see if that helps or improves it again

For me, it was all about grounds. Remember how I told you at the big loop cruise that I had some alternator whine after my stereo install? Well, that night I went home, pulled all the stereo trim out and rechecked my grounds. For starters, I was using the factory ground point behind the stereo to ground my stereo, and also my boost and water gauge and other electrical stuff. This was a bad idea. The other electrical items were causing interference through the headunit. So I used the factory ground bolt for the head unit, and then used another ground point for all the other electrical stuff. This dramatically reduced the whine. I then went back to my amp ground, and using a multimeter I found a ground point with the least resistance next to the amp. Shaved some paint off so it was bear metal, and hooked the amp ground up to that. This also helped a lot. So the moral of the story, get your friend to check all his grounds, and maybe pick some other grounds and dedicate them only to audio stuff.
