Fan hitting fan belt pulley

This only started happening at the end of the 'dub' cruise on sunday (thank god!)...

The problem started when I noticed a rattling sound whenever my car went over 2500RPM.. I stopped the car and got my mate to rev it, and I could see that the big fan in the engine bay was hitting the fan belt when then engine was taken over 2500RPM.

I've had a play around, and pretty much i've worked out that the thing that turns the fan is loose, causing the fan to spin at an off angle at high rpm's (excuse the lack of correct terminology).

I'm getting the zed checked out by a mech ASAP, however I was wondering if this was a common problem or if anyone knows if there is anything I can do to fix it?

    Cheers

    Could be loose nuts ...>>

    holding the fan pulley on.

Otherwise it's the fan clutch and they're expensive.

I spoke to Mark at MRC services, and he said it could either be the water pump or something else which I forgot and worse case would be $200..

I'm taking it in there sometime soon to get a full 100 000km service done so he's going to have a look at it for me soon.

    Cheers

Check the four bolts attatching the

fan to the finned alloy unit right in front of the water pump.

If you slide your hand in (engine stopped of course), locate a fan blade, Slide your hand down the front side until you feel the lip meet the finned unit (this is the fan clutch assembly). Feel for any looseness between it and the fan, it's a dead easy fix (4 x 10 or 12 mm bolts) you can reach yourself with a socket and some perseverance.

Just did this yesterday at the tech day!

Otherwise as the others said, if the finned unit is loose against the shaft closer to the engine then fan clutch/water pump etc.

Best and cheapest to start with the simplest/cheapest fixes first before throwing in the towel and paying a mechanic...:D

Thanks mark. I'll check this in the light tomorrow.

Normally I wouldn't jump up and go straight to a mechanic, however i'm getting the major 100 000km service done so he may aswell have a look at it at the same time he's changing the waterpump, timing belt etc...

    Cheers

If your fan is hitting your fan belt......>>

Then something is not right and you should not drive your car until you know what it is. If it is something as simple as a loose fan what will you do if it comes off while you are driving the car and damges the radiator? while you are in traffic running late for work?

The car hasn't gone anywhere since I got back from the cruise... I've been driving my brothers 1985 civic:thumbsdown:

Cant wait to get the zed back on the road tho! :zlove:

I had a belt hitting the fan, but it was only because the belt was partially off the pulley and had shredded a bit - I assume all the belts are still in reasonable condition and don't look tattered etc?

    belts are all fine...

I have it booked in for the major service, but earliest I could get was 2 weeks time so i'll be driving the civic until then..

fingers crossed its the water pump (could make sense as when I had the engine running today, there were irregular spurts of water coming from the middle of the engine bay under the car.. these spurts only happened over 2000rpm)

    Cheers

That they replace it with a genuine one. The aftermarket ones are crap and prone to failure.

We're using the "Major 1" 100 000km service kit from TTZED, so i'm pretty sure that has the genuine part.

I'll post back when the service has been done

    Yes it will......>>

Simon has seen what happens to the aftermarket pumps when they die. Definatley keep us posted with your discoveries. Too many people post about problems, but don't post what fixed it.
