Not happy Jan! Started smelling that familiar Glycol smell the other day, had a bit of a look this morning and found the heater core is leaking. This core was brand new from Nissan 22 months ago, and was also a warranty replacement for the one before which only lasted 10 months. The original one was 13 years old. Has anyone else had problems with new Nissan heater cores? This one and the last one both leaked in the same spot, where the core meets the tank, adjacent to where the pipe with the valve mounts to.What pisses me off the most is the fact I've only been able to drive the car for 2 days with the new boost controller fitted.

    I feel for you

I've had a problem very similar RE: My Poor Zed!!!
It's being replaced. And there's sooooo much coverage of Heater cores in the search areas and a few of them are mine. It's a Pr**k I know and it seems to be just an inherent problem of the Zed... Howver the new Nissan core I thought would've lasted longer than that? Has it been diagnosed what caused it 2nd time round?

    did you flush the coolant....

apparantly when you replace the core, you are meant to remove every last trace of old coolant from the system as it will corrode the heatercore quickly. I feel for you dude having done mine this weekend (see a few posts below). Maybe there was a bad batch of heatercores?? also, did you get a brand new one or a reco one??does anyone else find it scary how all of a sudden in the space of a few months, heaps of peoples heatercores have started failing?? Its if they came fitted with a clock and will self destruct all at the same time.Cheers

The reason they are all going.....>>

Recently could have something to do with the change from warm to cool weather and people starting to use them. Not many people use their heaters during summer.

Must be a sick joke played on Zed owners..

by Nissan Executives' !!! Bastards!!! We should have some sort of massive cruise to voice our frustration and dump all our used heater cores on their door step!
It does have an air of conspriacy about it doesn't it?!!

    well....

I still have my old heatercore sitting in the garage if you would like to perform some sort of exorcism or ritual sacrifice to make you feel better?..:) Such a small thing can cause so much frustration..:)Cheers

    pls explain....

when the heater is not being used, does coolant remain in the core even if the tap is switched off?? If so, then I guess the presence of this water would slowly eat away the core, instead of water that is constantly flowing through the core. I hope this makes sense..:)

maybe it could be the next big cruise

Does anyone know where the Major Nissan Place is located? Some sort of headquarters?

    Might not be heater core..>>

it could be your tap/valve seals (on the drivers side of the heater core). Unfortunately, it's slightly easier to change these seals than to replace the whole core.Cheers

    Flushed the block, everything else

was brand new (heater core, radiator, all hoses, all pipes, water pump, etc.) and was running MOTUL coolant. The core still looks brand new. I also made a point of running the climate control at 40 deg every once in a while during summer.
    Go figure.

    I was thinking....>>

More along the lines of heat and pressure, added to the fact that the coolant has probably sat over the summer months. I haven't had quite the indepth exposure to the zeds cooling system as you have but the fact that there is a tap would mean that flow is restricted and thus pressure.

Just out of interest, does anyone

who has had a heater core fail remember where it leaked from. All 3 that I've had fail have gone in the same place, where the core is welded to the tank, adjacent to the inlet pipe (the one with the tap). Would be interesting if this is where they all fail.
Also, think of how many 20+ year old cars are out there with the original heater cores in them. I am starting to believe that Nissan are taking us for a ride, especially as the new heater cores are around $500! They offered me a new one for $415, but I kindly told them to stick it.
I am buying an aftermarket one from UAS for $180.
