Made a custom box for a pair of 10" subs and I'm lighting the inside of the box in red neon, so I figure that'll match nicely with the show stereo setup myself and my friends (who will be doing most of the work coz they're damn good at it) are planning to install...

There are laws governing what color lights you can have where

and its state to state I think.
I believe these have recently changed in WA at least because it was previously illegal to use undercar neons, its now legal.

The stock illuminated panels are not red, they are blue or green I think and Ive never heard of anyone being pulled over for it, so personally I wouldnt worry. If your concerned best to check out your local state law.

I believe we all should check with the each state RTA to find exactly if an illuminated panel in writing form (300ZX)is allowed. If anyone finds out please post

 

What type of back light is it?

Just a question this type of illumination/zeon/light etc, what is it exactly, does it light up all the time is it hooked up to the electrical light system when switching on the driving lights at night it shines?

Checked With RTA NSW

I checked with the Tech person at the RTA, he informs me you can't have anyform form of other lighting except for that of the standard brake lights and normal driving lights. He tells me that it's illegal to do what I told him have a illumination light for the 300ZX logo. He had to check as he wasn't sure, don't know if he knew himself maybe just said no its illegal

If I was to call the RTA again and talk to someone else he may tell me something different, from a logic point of view I haven't personally seen any form of back lighting on any car besides the standard.

If anyone wants to double check this so we have the same correct info please find out as well. I really want these on the back of my Z but not if it's going to cause a defect of some sort

same as zisluv, and i think i might go for the red... i think you'd be safer with red on your tail than any other colour, right?

does it shine when the headlights are on? or when you are braking?

i remember reading in an autosalon magazine a while ago, they did an article on stuff similar to this.
from what i remember, there's something about how you can't have blue lights on the back, red and blue would be the hardest one's i imagine as if you have this on, for some reason it may cause people to believe police, an ambulance or a fire truck.
i can't see how someone could think a zed is, but at the end of the day, the law is the law.
the same laws apply on boats as well, certain coloured lights in certain places.
i think red should be fine, blue will be a problem, can't imagine green.
from whati know based on undercar neons research etc., if your in tasmania, your fine,
if your on the east coast, your pretty much screwed and in w.a. its a mix and match of laws.

for ppl in w.a., have to call the department of transport, about a year ago there was a file on it you could download.
