hey guys ive just had a second hand engine installed into my car but it wont kick over when you try to start it? my mechanic said i need a new engine harness but they cost a fortune any ideas of what i could do to fix the situation? cheers!
yeah mate that what i meant but i didnt know how to explain it? my mechanic hooked up a little light to the plug that connects to the coilpack and tried starting the car. The globe then lite up but very faintly. Thats all i no about the car..?
not enough power in the batt? try putting another battery in... sometimes jumper leads just arnt enough.. unless you have big ones.... what does it sound like when you try to turn it on? it kicks once and then just clicks?
Further to this, if it is a lack of battery power issue, ensure ALL earth straps are connected well to the chassis. They can be easily missed and cause insufficient power loop. double check the Plenum and bell housing earth straps are secured properly. Second to that, if you didn't get a new harness and your mechanic mentioned that your current one is in poor nick, then it's very common to have cracked wires in the loom especially when they're old and brittle - then you go and bend them all up when doing an engine swap. I've seen this many times aswell. I'd be checking continuity for your major wires from connectors in the engine bay through to the pins on the ECU. Particularly: PTU CAS TPS as these ones in particular can cause engine to not run at all if circuit is broken in the cables. Just a couple of quick things to check off first, before looking too deep
cheers for all the help but we've already checked all the above so it looks like i need a new wiring harness... do you know where i would be able to buy one for cheap in australia?
If the motor cranked over before hand before the motor install, then possibly very very possibly the mechanic just simply hasn't installed the starter motor cable. The earth strap, the positive strap and the ignition starter wire. Why on earth get an entire new harness, simply test a few components that most mechanics are knowledgable enough to do. Get it towed from the mechanics and take it to a auto electrician. Your mechanic does not know enough. Don't waste your money with him. Anyone can pull out a motor and put another one in but not everyone can install it and make it run.
Quick test... Get another car and some jumper cables. Then bypass your FPCU (look at the end of the writeup in the troubleshooting bit). Then try and start it. This will take you 10 minutes and cost you nothing.
does it damage the fuel pump in any way and will the noise go away once you connect the wire back up?
No it won't damage the fuel pump. I know of people that have run it that way (myself included) for years without problem. Yes it will go back to normal if you reconnect the wire.
If you follow my directions, you are actually connecting a wire temporarily. When the car is running and all is done, yes you disconnect it.
