Hi guys, my N/A has a strange metallic 'ticking' that changes frequency with revs. It's quite loud and very consistent. I've had it for quite a while and it hasnt caused any major problems but weird noises are worrying. My mechanic told me some bs and dismissed it but a mate who's also a mechanic thinks it could be lifter related. Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Joel

Very likely to be hydraulic lifter related. I believe that there is a procedure in tech section on method to fix this without dismantling top of engine. I have found that this rarely works and the lifters have to be replaced or removed and cleaned, ultra sonic is best

ok chances are its a lifter :)

    BUT .. good news.
    TIS COMMON,

    method 1: change your oil+filter.
if noise persists move to next method
Method 2: run a lifter free up through the new oil ($20 bucks servo/super cheap)
if noise persists, Change oil again BUT AVOID using a engine flush, instead use a deisel OIL.. yes.. thats right..
but run it through for 1500-2000k's without running the Car to hard in that time at all...

Noise should be gone or at least deminish significantly after 1 of those phases..
IF NOT, then you may have mechanical damage and need new / or cleaned ones

Awesome, I'll give the lifter free a go tomorrow and if that doesn't help i'll grab some RX super from work :)
