Hello, I just bought my first 1989 Nissan 300ZX Z32 from a private seller today, Without Rego or a Road worthy cert and was given a 'failed' Road worthy cert, so I would know what is needed to be done. Main concern is, that the Speedometer and Tachometer both work but do not show the correct speed and RPM. What could be the cause of this problem? Once running, the speedo stays on 60 no matter what speed, and tacho stays on 2 no matter what. Please help
I would double check the connections at the back of the cluster. There can be problems with the soldered joints at which some may require attention. Further to this I would check the speed sensor in the gearbox. They can fail and sometimes are a simple fix or a complete replacement. Have a bit of a search regarding this as there are a few how to's. Does your steering feel firm all the time or intermittently going soft and hard? If you got a fail due to a non working cluster but nothing else that's pretty good
From experience in older cars xf fords and such a simple bad connection can result in a stable reading. Ie: 60km/h and 2000rpm. Does it go upto 60 from 0 or just straight to 60 with powering up. Sorry if it's no help like I said it was a few fords that did it. I guess the speedo sensor is a good start but doesn't explain the rpm. Tampered cluster someone tried to wind back also.
It goes up to 60 while the engine is running, and also 2 RPM -3 RPM while running, when engine is not running, both are at 0. Simple bad electrical connections are usually the cause for older vehicles, as my 86' volvo had a bit of that but I have read else where that if the Speedo doesn't work than the Tacho shouldn't either
You can have one working without the other. Definitely try a full cluster swap with one that is known working. Fastest way to track it down.
If there's a bad signal from the speed sensor on the transmission, than your cruise control and power steering may be affected as a result. RPM readings are taken from the CAS. http://www.pexcom.com.au/z32cms/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.321 http://z32.wikispaces.com/Consult+Quick+Reference NA and TT speed sensors.
