    Hi all
I have had my car for almost a year, on the weekend the alt squealed and stopped charging due to oil leaks so I studied the tech section on plenum removal and dived in. the cam seals are leaking badly but my question is, the egr pipes are totally blocked with thick oily crud, I don't know any history of the car, what would possibly cause this blocked pcv valves? I am yet to take them out. 89 TT 125k auto

Are you sure the EGR pipes are blocked? The hole for gasses to exit are on the side, not at the top -it's a common mistake.

No drama if they are blocked though it just means you aren't getting exhaust gas through your intake.

That's Carbon. As you have the plenum chamber off now is a good time to go for a couple of deletes such as EGR etc. Worth the effort. Its on the site.

yes they are blocked, I found the holes on the side very sneaky,, they are both chocker bloc. I still have to get the intake off I have a new det sensor to go on, I need to check out ready sleeves for the cams mentioned in another post, still abit to do good to know it wont cause any problems if I cant get the valve and pipes off.

Are the EGR pipes blocked at the entry points to the intake manifold?
If so, it is not uncommon. :)
Just need to clean out the gunk, you may need a strong caustic solution to shift it. :)
The EGR system is an air pollution device & is fitted to reduce the combustion temperature in the cylinders, which in turn reduces NOX from the exhaust.
You will notice the EGR Valve located at the rear of the engine, is operated by vacuum.
It may be worthwhile applying vacuum & checking if the valve is opening & closing correctly, also check the valve for air leaks.
