i need to install an new computer to take my zed to the next stage. What r most people using? Pro's and Con's for each. My local workshop are pushing the motec range but i was thinking hitec form ttzed.com (price looks good) or a power fc if i go all out.

    Cheers Josh

    ECU options

    1. get your stock ECU 'socketed', get a Romulator and create a custom tune

    Pros
    ----
    - Cheap (~$350 all up)
    - Full control over all ECU settings

    Cons
    ----
    - You need to know the intricacies of programming an ECU for when you take it to the dyno
    - doubtful if any dyno tuners know how to program an ECU using the Romulator if you can't do it yourself
    - risk frying your ECU

    2. get a hitec ECU

    Pros
    ----
    - a one size fits all program for stock injectors / turbos
    - generally respected amongst the Z community

    Cons
    ----
    - slightly more expensive than option 1
    - unless you live in Melbourne, difficult to get a custom tune
    - program not customisable by the user

    3. get a motec / microtech etc type ECU

    Pros
    ----
    - most dyno tuners know how to tune these
    - custom tune suited to your car

    Cons
    ----
    - bloody expensive

You could try a Unichip or similar

I was quoted ages ago $1100 to get a Unichip installed and tuned. Cheaper than a Hitec (Unichip is about $600 from memory, the $500 is for install and tune).

Motec is the ultimate, but out of many peoples price range. I have a Microtech which is extracting plenty of power and allowed me to ditch the AFM. I like the chip and the DASH display you can buy additionally for it and the microtech installed and tuned its around just under half the price of a Hitec.

Whatever you decide with, go on the dyno!

How much is a Hitec? How much is a Microtech?

I was under the impression that a Hitec chip was not very expensive, compared to a new computer.

BTW, I have a Unichip going cheap, if anyone wants one.

    Costs

I see where I wrote wrong. I wrote 'just under half the price' instead of 'just under the price'. Sorry about that. (and its only just under the price of the way I would do it). (mods can edit that bit out to avoid further confusion if they want)

    anyway

The cost for the Hitec is
    $790 for the NA
    $990 for the TT
$895 for the Hitec smart tuner

    Microtech is around $1695 (+tune)

Unichip is around $600 from memory (+tune around $500ish)

so yes Hitec is cheaper then microtech

if people wanted the Hitec for a TT, t hen smart tuner, or a dyno tune at around $100+ per hour, you would be more infront with a unichip and not too far off a Microtech.

I guess you could just get the Hitec chip and 'plug and play' (people outside Vic may have to?) sort of thing but in my op inion, not a good idea. It would be the cheapest of all the options though. (but people should at least get on a dyno to make sure the tune is ok and safe and gives more power).

But if I was to get the Hitec, I'd get the chip ($990) smart tuner if I knew what I was doing costing ($895) or get it fully dyno tuned ($500-600) + fuel to take me 1700km or so. (to Victoria and back). Phew! All up minimum cost At the end of all that I may as well have gotten a Microtech.

But if you drove all the way to Vic.....>>

You wouldn't need the smart tuner as Bob can tune locally, then burn a ROM and away you go. That would save you the $895 for the smart tuner. If you did buy the Hitec and the smart tuner you could then get it tuned locally and save on making the trip. At the end of the day it really depends on how much you want to spend and do you want to keep the factory ECU. Some systems mod the ECU, some work with the ECU and some replace it.

Yeah, sorry thats what I meant

hence the 'or' bit. I figured it was a choice between getting a dyno tune in Victoria or a smart tuner. But as I wouldn't know what I was doing, i'd have to fork more money out to someone who has a laptop and knows what to do.

Also, what if somebody drove to Vic, got it tuned to the cars current mods, then later did further mods. Would they have to drive back? Or would smart tuner just be the way to go for interstate people who plan on making more and more mods.

It does seem like a competetively priced ECU, but only in victoria

    Thanks for the advice guys

Just got a few prices form my work shop and have just about decided on a motec m4 for $3000 fully installed tuned and should get the car moving along nicely. The plan is for it to be able to run some larger injectors down the track and guys have got 1 in there zed race car thats putting out some handy dyno figures around the 300kw so i figure its a good base!

    Thanks again

Yep, can't really go wrong with the Motec.

Motec is a good choice

I have a motec M800 and love it. Its especially coming in handy with the mods Im doing at the moment. Just make sure you have enough inputs to match any future upgrade plans you might have.

the M800 doesn't have enough output drivers for what

I want to control so what can you do with the motec range to get more output drivers to drive 24 injectors.

Till the pathetic number of outputs these ECUs have increases to a decent count they are not of much use for what I want.

How do people control 16 injectors on multi-stage injector equipped engines like the Chev LT5 engine. Then if it has nitrous the thing has another 8 injectors (hence why I want to have 24 injector driver outputs).

    yep here it is >

    MicroTech

and if you end up getting one order it straight from the website as this will be the best price you can get it for.
