ok so a question which some may think to be idiotic but im a complete noob. my dvd player only has front (left/right) and rear (left/right) out but i want to chuck in my sub and amp, how would i wire this in?
use your rear outputs to the amp, then set the low pass filter on the amp so that it only passes your low level (bass), wired to your sub. Will only get 1 channel out of this (left or right). That is provided that when you use your RCA outputs that it doesnt cancel out your dvd player wire outputs. Am assuming that you have your speakers driven directly from the unit. Fade control of the DVD player will affect your levels to the amp, but generally your fade level is set, so just adjust your gain on your amp to compensate.
ok so as i said complete noob, i have a amp with front and rear seperately adjusted inputs/outputs, would it be possible to split the rear output from dvd player into two sets and plug to both front and rear and run the sub off one set and rear 6x9's off the other
That is possible. Depends on the RMS output of the amplifier. is it bridgeable? You can:- a. Wire your front speakers directly from your DVD player b. Wire your DVD rear RCA outputs directly to your amplifier From your amplifier a. Amplifier "front" outputs- wire your 6x9's. Set your filter to "hi pass" b. Amplifier "rear" outputs- bridge them and wire your sub. Set your filter to "low pass"
also, if your amplifier is a 4-channel output. It doesnt necessarily need to have 4-channel input. Should be labelled as so that you can plug 1 set of RCA's into it which the amp then splits into your 4 channel output. Will just have to adjust your amplifier gains once its all installed, so that you dont have too big a difference in volume between your front speakers and your rear speakers, and then your sub between all 4 speakers.
this is the type of amp i have http://webshop.cashconverters.com.au/item/270053/Car_Amplifier_Avalanche_Wsp_4100v/
yeah, is possible with that amplifier. Doesnt look like you can just have stereo inputs that the amplifier splits itself. Just get 2 pairs of RCA splitters- 1 x Female end split to 2 x Male ends for your RCA inputs from your DVD player to your amplifier. a. Wire your 6x9's into your amplifier "front" wire outputs. Set Crossover to "high" and adjust "level" to suit required comparitive volume to front speakers. b. Wire your sub into your amplifier "rear" wire outputs, bridged (as indicated on the terminals, use the 2 outsite terminals). Set your crossover to "bass" adjust your "bass frequency" to about 80Hz..... depending on sub, you will get the drift once it starts driving the sub. See what kind of affect your "bass boost" does for you. Set your "level" to suit comparitive bass to the other 4 speakers. So, your 6x9's are getting 150W per channel, and your sub is getting a bridged 300W. Considering readings most likely arent in RMS, you wont have a competition setup, but will still give you pretty good sound. Outputs from most headunits with MOSFET are generally 50W per channel, so you will get pretty good sound out of your front speakers as well.
yeh it may not be competetion but hey it gives a good kick, in my old car i had it wired purely to my 800W Sony Xplod and it dealt me some chest thumping goodness lol

Solder your DVD REAR OUTPUTS to these RCA Female connectors, or knock up a couple of adaptors with some speaker wire, if you dont want to make it a permanent modification to your DVD player. Bit of Electrical tape around the wires to make it tidier and keep it all together. Just remember, + to the centre, - to the outside. 60 cents each
