Putting back together. Line up marks on new timing belt with marks on pulleys etc. Then follow instructions to turn crankshaft 2 complete turns.
Now marks on belt and pulleys no longer line up. Are they supposed to? They seem to shift everytime I turn the crank.

Are they supposed to line up again if I keep turning the crankshaft? How many times do I have to turn it?

Grateful for any help. I'm confused and don't want to do any damage.

They won't line up with every revolution so don't stress, if you had the pulleys in the correct postitions, marks corresponding to casing/backing plate marks, and the marks on the belt corresponding aswell, you will be fine.

parker Been around for a bit

    yeah i think your right

i will prob get burned for saying something when im not a professional. but when i did mine it was the same deal. if you keep turning it over with a wrench you will get them to line up again. Ive done 10k since i did it and no damage so you should be fine..as long as they were all lined up when the belt was placed on you will be fine

    Thanks

Yes I lined up the pulley marks with the backing plate marks, lined up the crank pulley with the mark on the oil pump housing and then lined up the mark on the belt with the mark on the crank. Then lined up the mark on the passenger side exhaust pulley with the mark on the belt and so on.
Got them all lined up. Adjusted the tensioner and then rotated the crank and got confused. If I keep turning the crank will they eventually line up again. Sometimes they are close but 2 teeth out?

Im not sure how many turns untill it likes up again, could be 10 could be 100, but if you did it all right at first, all will be good, 2 turns by hand like you did also ensures nothing is fouling (ie valves and pistons) and as long as you tensioned it right like Chad said, it should be fine.

    Thanks Chad, Parker and Mattyhylander

That's great. Yes I adjusted the tensioner correctly and it didn't jump. LOL I've been turning it over for 20 mins waiting for it to line up again. Using a socket on the crank takes forever and I didn't think that it was worth removing the sparks. LOL I'm building up my arm muscles.

    Oh oh

Just accidentally released too much tension on the tensioner and the belt jumped. Have to start again. Just Line up all the marks......

It would have been easier with an assistant! LOL

how did it skip a teeth? by you turning the crank? or did u crank the engine over with the key?

i would like someone very experienced in this field to reply to what you have done before you finish the job.....

The marks on the belt wont line up once you've turned it but the marks on the backing plate and the marks on the sprockets should line up *almost* spot on.
When u first install the timing belt you have to have the marks on the sprockets perfectly line up with the marks on the belt

When I released the tensioner slightly

to adjust the gap, I loosened it too much and the drivers side intake pulley skipped about 10 teeth. I am now lining up all the marks again, the hard 1 is the driver's side exhaust pulley, it now seems under pressure.

Be very carefull if you feel pressure as it could be the valves touching the pistons and you don't wanna bent anything
