I have recently purchased a PPG dogbox for the zed and as I was pulling it apart to swap the dog rings I thought Id open up a standard box for comparisons sake. I have to say that this thing is a serious bit of gear, I cannot tell you how impressed I am with it. I want to make a joke about it being "box" porn but im not going to grind your gears with gearbox puns Standard Box Dog Box Gear Ratios Firstly from the books the gear ratios are different. This box has 1-4th helical gear on dogs. 5th gear is standard. Standard. 1st - 3.213 2nd - 1.926 3rd - 1.302 4th - 1.000 5th - 0.762 PPG 1st - 2.621 2nd - 1.637 3rd - 1.240 4th - 1.000 5th - 0.762 Gear Width 1st gear. STD - 21mm PPG - 29mm 2nd gear. STD - 21mm PPG - 29mm 3rd Gear STD - 24ish mm PPG - 28ish mm 4th gear STD - 28mm PPG - 29mm Shifting mechanism. Syncro Box When syncro hub, syncro and actual gear line up the syncro coupler which is attatched the the selector fork can slide over and lock them to the gear. Not aligned (No shifty) Aligned ( Can Shifty) In gear (Shiftied) Dog Box. Has 5 dog teeth on the gear and also on the shift rings between gears. No syncros so changes are made with quick, firm movements of the stick. With rev matching no clutch is necessary outside of 1st gear. Out of gear. In Gear (aint no body got time for syncros) A pics of the new dog ring that I'm putting in. As I said before its a mean bit of gear (rated for 800hp) and Im looking forward to doing some 1/4mile runs with this thing in the car when I eventually finish it. The lower ratio of first gear will hopefully make it more usable with the NA diff. ztoy :zlove:
