Designing an Exhaust Manifold

if you are making an exh mani, is it a case of wanting less mass because that means less expansion under heat?

ie. you don't want your walls too thick otherwise there will be too much expansion

    or is that bs?

Too broad a question to answer.

Depends on the material you are using. A material with a high thermal expansion property is going to require a design that reduces the stress caused by expansion of the metal.

IMHO, if your talking about the Greddy manifolds, it is not the material they chose, nor the design that is at fault. Individually they could be used but when they are paired together they will fail.

SZ is taking orders for MS manifolds, I have sent them 2 emails and they are yet to reply.. so I am not sure if it's bullshit or not.

lots of things, because if you are considering spending > $500 for custom manis, just buy the MS ones, they will outflow anything except tubulars.

    TT manifolds

i saw these awsome ones some japanese guys made for a TT on some link through this forum a few months ago, they were perfection, and the three outlets all sort of twisted around each other and didn't join till the dump pipe flange, i think they cost about 3k to buy, from memory
    cheers

Yeah Z1 sell a similar set for $2100USD. I almost scored a set of them for $1500USD until the guy decided not to sell :(

    Are you talking about pentroof's?

AFAIK they are still the highest flowing manifolds on the market. Is it worth it? mmm....

ok.. pentroof mother f'n manifolds.. pentroofs own car was in last months HPI.. guess what.. they used ported stock manis on their own freaking car coz theyre worried the stainless ones would crack!

and matt is looking at spending around 300 bucks on manis.. and more time than one can imagine..

how much are the mike smith ones.. i dont think they will compare anywhere near 500 bucks

    Egg ....

You know what would be really great.

If you could cast something tuned length like the pentroofs. Think it would be too hard, or simply not possible.
We really should investigate getting some local castings done... I hear they are real cheap! What do they cost? It's pretty basic stuff and it's simply iron.
What $75 per casting and about the same in machining? For log style like MS.

I heard $600USD, but I am expecting $1000USD, either way it's damn cheap. Ported and honed stockies are a waste of money. For an extra $500AUD, I would rather something that will last as long as stock and outflow them by more than 2-3 times at the least. The time and money you would spend designing them, and then 'hoping' they will hold up isn't worth it IMO unless you are dedicated to doing it like what egg is doing.

Even $300AUD is a rip off for cast manifolds, it is only a few dollars in material. Once the mould is made, they shouldn't cost any more than material and finishing, but it's still cheaper than inconels so who cares.

it would be interesting to see what MS manis come out at.. i bet they go for a pretty penny

yeah i too think matt would be wasting his time.. weve already had this conversation

i used to have a mate that was a god at sculpting and sand casting.. (was a movie model maker and boiler maker.. and spent many years sand casting iron in a foundry to boot.. made some gorgeous art peices when he went through that phase.. but his since moved back to scotland).. actually he had all these peices that were cast stainless steel.. why dont you see that much?

anyway off topic.. theres no reason you couldnt cast equal length manis.. ive seen far more complex things cast before.. theres probably something stopping people from doing it (no market anymore??who knows)

im sticking with my ported stockies.. slot car makes 456rwkw on em.. the pentroof car makes over 600rwhp on em..

im not aiming at anywhere near those hp figures.. think my turbos will be my limiting factor now

yeah this sounds good, but who will lead the project? egg, i nominate you as the group leader
    hehe

but yeah, it would be awesome if we could fabricate our own cast mani's

Why dont we all chip in and buy one set of MS manifolds and copy em off.

I know a good casting guy.

I have em here actually. There are a few changes to be made.

Its gonna be a long road getting em right I would think.

Any cast part is going to be hugely cheaper than any tubular manifold that has to be made.

I recon we could make 20 cast sets pretty reasonably with no risk of them breaking at all.

    It's another option.

If they cost USD $1000 for MS manifolds if we get 10 people in at Aussie $150 a share to buy in on em. Who's up for that?

The first 10 would get the cheapest price for the manifolds and we would work out a price for the rest.

    Post here guys !!

    Question is

How much power do you want?
Anything made out of stainless will eventually crack and NO GOOD for track car.
Also stickers don't make power neither does Bling although sometimes it is an added bonus.

Steam pipe is the go but may not be better than factory extrude honed ones as such a tight fit. External gate steam pipe even better but cost is up again and factory ones which won't crack are great for 450plus rwkw and no lag, but if you want more than that then ?

Proper extrude honed raham not sand blasted copies and there is onyone guy in Australia that does them and he is in Sydney, www.abrasiveflow.com although don't bother contacting him as some have as they are exclusive to us.

The MS manifolds are not just stock ones souped up John.

They have a much larger bore diameter. That is why they flow better.

Without a lot of work stainless manifolds are not acceptable I agree.

i'd be in on that graham, however, the sooner the better! my engine is coming out in a few weeks! it may be out for a couple of months though, so i can wait a little...

how about starting a new thread for it to get the attention that it deserves?
