Can anyone tell me if its possible to reach the dash holding bolts without dismantling the car? Ive had this evil rattle from drivers side base of A pillar for ages n its driving me nuts, i think i remember reading somewhere the dash has 4 bolts holding it in place so thinking thatd be a good place to start. Cant find how to get at them though

    Look at the Service Manual.

Maybe this will help. http://www.300zx-twinturbo.com/s.manual/bf/016.gif It is for a US vehicle but just mirror the view.
Also there is a Heater core replacement article in the Tech section that shows the dash removal with pics. I have done it and it is tedious but not difficult just time consuming.

What I do when dismantling complicated parts is replace the bolt or screw after removal then removing the bolts and screws when re assembling. This way there is no guess work about which bolt or screw belongs where.

Before all this i am assuming you have checked for any loose fittings behind the kick panel etc...

    Good luck.

Pull the demist vents out and tighten the 4 bolts along the front of the windscreen. They are shouldered and can't break the plastic if they are done up too tight.( provided they are original bolts) That will prob be your squeaky bit.
