Took my baby for a spin last night with the datalogger on to get some stats before getting some work done today on it. So I wound it out a little for about twenty minutes.

Got home, checked the datalogger out and did a double-take. It told me the temperature was just over 100 and had gotten there quickly. The car does feel hot...

I found that if I squinted, then tilted my head back and to the side, the temperature gauge maybe was above where it usually sits: 80degrees.

The reason was loss of coolant due to a leak between the block and the firewall. I'm sure she's going to be alright though. So the real killer is the stock temp gauge.

I guess I should at least put in one of them famous TWD...

    TWD won't stop a water leak !

Just thought I'd edit that. It looks terrible. I love my TWD and admire the concept. Problem is it still requires the driver to make a decision : Is this a normal rise in Temp because of ambient temp/conditions or a serious problem? We all "drive through" the TWD flash to bring the temp down (air off etc", I used to do it all the time last December, until it dumped all the water and you will see the result of that in my Engine Re-build thread. "Part Two- The build" will now start on Thursday because of a problem with head bolts

As we have all found out the temp gauge is about as useful as something is of no use at all !

Come-on Baz:p How many times have you driven through the

warning light?;) I was doing it quite a lot in December when it was 40 deg in Brisbane. I believe I already had a minscule head gasket leak from the previous o/heat that my wife had coming back from Tamborine a couple of month earlier. Remember that one Kzed?

I'm currently driving around with a laptop running Consult software

to test the operation of the TWD. Its been interesting to see how much the water temp changes under slightly varying driving conditions.

Thinking of long term temp monitoring options does anyone have any thoughts or experience with:

    (a) a digital temperature meter, or

    (b) Consult software running on a handheld PDA?

Consult software running on a handheld PDA?

    Talk to Caz1 about EcuXtend.

BTW: PM me with your latest temp findings. I had a similar TWD 'fault' the other day... was incorrectly installed by a 3rd party.

I've wanted to make one for ages...

but I just don't have the time at the moment. There's a guy on Skylines Down Under forum called Impakt. He makes the following device.

It looks pretty good, particularly as it now has fault reading & clearing. The Whole thread from satisfied customers can be viewed HERE.

I'm definately in the market for one of these at some stage down the track if I get too lazy to make my own.

You could probably use the temperature sensor wire and a simple circuit to make it drive either a strip of leds as it gets hotter or a 7 segment display.

very simple answer, vic ...NEVER !! ... my TWD has activated twice ..

the first time was 2-3 weeks after installation .. an immediate pull over .. to discover a stuffed heater core .. to have ignored the TWD and to have continued on in that situation would have cooked my motor ,,, not very smart move in my book ...

the second time was during keza's visit .. high external temps, a/c full bore etc, .. killed a/c immediately, waited for motor to cool down, contacted k-zed for advice
.. then let vehicle stand for several hours ( e.g.a round of golf ).. and no further issues emerged .. however for that reason alone, i have opened my nose cone and will install a radiator air guide .. i want NO temp issues on my zed..

my heater core experience and the disaster avoided, taught me that the TWD is there for a purpose .. go ahead, ignore it .. you do so at your own risk .. and to my mind, in folly ....
