Anyone see a current affair the other night in reference to any car that looked hot or modded in melbourne got moved to the side whereby the police, RTA and even the EPA went through them like a dose of salts.:(

Apparently they were checking for exhaust decibels (90Db), minimum heights, legal window tints/ lights (HID's) and EGR's. Apparently this will go national due to the success (they were raking heaps in with fines averaging $500)

I am led to believe that removing the EGR is not in line with RTA standards and thus illegal. I am confident the car would pass any inspection but not the EGR if I deleted it. Given that EGR's are deleted on Z's in a majority and this is being specifically targeted by them (it was specifically mentioned )- how will we Z's go? Obviously they must know what the EGR is, if they are targeting them.:(

The reason being - I was about to delete the EGR in mine, given that most others delete it, so I was wondering if anyone here has ever been defected or knocked back on rego due to EGR being deleted before?

Thoughts, comments please, as I am curious to know what all other :zlove: here think about all of this and whether anyone has had a problem from the authorities with an EGR delete before.

    Regards

My EGRs are still there for this reason, however they have been blocked at the back of the engine.

    Just block them off.

What rock have you been living under? This shit has gone on every day in sydney and every other state and will never stop. Dont want to be targetted? Modify it in a way that complies with the rules.

Happens all the time here on the Gold Coast now too but they always do it in the same spot and there's three nearby roads that bypass them so they've never managed to pull me up.

There's nothing illegal about my Z tho and the last cop to lift the bonnet nearly had a heart attack and instead tried to get me pinged for stock recaros without a mod plate.

Honestly and in all fairness I've never met a cop who had a clue what they were looking at.

Mentioning such things here isn't a good idea Sanouske, is a cop.

It's true, but he's the kind who wears leather hotpants and uses the handcuffs on himself.

Let's not go into detail about where he keeps the nightstick either...

    <EDIT>

But srsly, sanouske isn't actually a cop. That was just mentioned in passing in a thread somewhat tongue in cheek.

I always thought they test for EGRs by checking the exhaust emissions??.......rather than just a visual inspection? Don't quote me on that though!

That would probably explain why they were sticking probes up the exhaust pipes on the the program

LMFAO. haha. That made me laugh. If i were a cop i would be the dodgiest copper out there. haha. Seriously... some times you've just gotta do things to get things done...

Removing the EGR gear isnt as big a no no as most think. If you're engine is outputting correct figures and they dont see that its missing, they will not know any different. The EPA guys would only put their sniffer at the rear and if it were out of range they would inspect further. Having the EGR gear installed but disconnected would deem more dishonest then completely removing it and they not realising its not there. Some of you interstate guys can have it engineered without providing youre tune is compensating and the engine is burning clean.

If you're cats arent converting the emissions as good as new that too would trip the scales. It in itself would mean they'd check more over the vehicle.

ACA over dramatise most issues. Grain of salt sort of thing.

EGR was deleted in later model zeds....

So tell them you have an engine from a later model zed (96+ I believe, or it could be 94+, cant remember). Thanks to Nissan, the engine number stamped on the back does not give any indication as to when the engine was manufactured...

I still have my EGR, and wont be deleting it.... But if I did, I would always have that excuse ready. Of course, how you would go about arguing that on the side of the road with a policeman who is intent on giving you trouble, who knows.....

Having said all that, in nearly 11 years of Zed ownership, I've never had the police give me trouble. Even on those times when I was a few k's over and got pulled over for a speeding fine, they have never asked to go through the car... Lucky I must be....

Yes they do. They are to comply with emission test for ADR 37/00. Which is very very liberal. The problem is most testers have no idea what they are doing and test for either ADR 79/01 or ADR 37/01 Both of which the VG30DETT fail miserably without significant tuning and newer generation of cats.
I think it sucks if they are targeting "modified cars" as I believe that these are the least of environmental concern. Like you say it is just about rasing money. Keep away from the areas they target, and also write to your local MP about your grievence.

I think what this article was more promoting is a recent debate

    Car hoons vs car enthusiasts

And the confusing line between the two. To most of us that is a clear line. But unfortunately people in the interview who were characteristically car hoons called themselves enthusiasts.
Which to that point, increases the distortion for police and outside perspectives on what a car enthusiast is.

I've copped it before, I have a modified car and someone refers to you as a hoon because you have a loud exhaust .

There are active groups against this already and trying to promote what the differences are while working with the police .

There is a Sutherland shire street cop and rod show on in a few months to aid this .

At the end of the day , we have to bite a bullet . We will be targeted on average because our cars get attention both good and bad.

    Hi prockyz89

I wish that was the case and you were right, but clearly evident from the cars beng stopped on the program - it was not a case of hoons being seperated from enthusiasts at all. It was anyone and everyone who had a modified or improved car other than stock.

Many of those stopped in the program appeared to be mature and respectable people with respectable late model cars - I'm sure you can bring up the program on you tube or somewhere so that you can see for yourself. This is what alarmed me the most out of it all.

    Regards
