Could this be happening???

My Mrs car seems to be 'shutting down' as such at mostly random intervals, although most problems occur going up hill. The car surges badly and then stalls. It is then unable to be started for an hour or so (maybe more). Several mechanics have had no luck diagnosing the issue other than error code for the O2 sensor, and it's not plugs, coil packs, etc.

For ages it was suspected that the fuel pump was on the way out and it would fail at the mentioned random times, but I had another thought today.

If there were a reasonably large crack in the exhaust before the O2 sensor, could it be sucking air into the exhaust causing the O2 levels to be too high and so feeds the engine too much fuel and basically floods the engine???

A friend had a similar issue.

He could drive a certain distance, car would stop. Wait for a while and then it would be OK.

A mechanic bypassed the fuel regulator so the pump was basically continously running.

I think there maybe something in the tech section about this.

    Have you replaced the PTU?

Haven't checked anything out in too much depth yet... It's the Mrs car (a Daewoo POS) so I haven't been too worried. Amec had it a while ago and while we weren't sure if the fuel pump was going they got it into good enough condition that it hasn't played up since. Replacement OEM was about $850 + labour!!! Hence we didn't bother changing it without being sure that was going to fix it.
