    Hi Zedders

I'm in the final (and painful) stages of getting my car RWC. I have to replace the steering wheel with the factory one I bought on the weekend.

I've tried unscrewing the bolt and then pulling the wheel 'off' as hard as I can, and getting a mate to bang it with a rubber mallet. But to no avail.....

Is there any other way I can get this thing off without:

    A) Taking copious amounts of steriods, spending 3 months at the gym and trying again

    or

    B) Taking it to a mech?

    Thanks

You need to "rock" it off........>>

With the nut screwed on loosley (so the wheel wont hit you in the face), sit in the seat and bang with your hands on either side at the back of the wheel alternating between left and right. Hit the wheel on either side and top and bottom. Should come loose easily unless it was forced on. If it still won't come off you may need to resort to using a puller.

    to add to that...

when i was taking mine off i found that pulling it evenly from both top and bottom and rocking it left to right helped.

the gears that it goes on is very tight so you need to make sure its being bulling straight out and not pushed to either side.

As for changing steering wheels ...I would like to an aftermarket one on

and all I have seen are ones with about 5 or six holes around the centre. Is that a fairly universal configuration or as I suspect is the Z different?

    The factory wheel.......>>

Is like most other factory wheels in that it is a wheel and hub in one piece. Most aftermarket wheels are designed just that, a wheel, to which you add the required hub to suit the vehicle the wheel is being mounted to. You should also be careful becuase the 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 holes around the wheel center can differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, s a Momo hub may not fit a Sparco or OMP wheel.

    thanks

I'll give that technique a try on the weekend and see if I have any luck.

Thanks for the tip Wykked and dr_zx

    Go with the steering-wheel puller...

To avoid damage to the wheel (and yourself) go get hold of a steering-wheel puller. They're actually quite cheap, as they basically consist of 4-5 long bolts and a bracket. Helps if you engage steering lock first as well .
