Did a quick search through the tech section and couldnt really find much in the way of how change the clutch fan over. i have a new fan and blade and want to replace my old ones, sorry for the noob question but is it as simple and just undoing hte old one and putting the new one in., whats involved how long would it take for a complete noob?
Remove upper radiator fan shroud Remove lower radiator fan shroud Remove fan clutch Swap blades over Reverse order Maybe 30-120m depending on how quick you work
haha, thanks but is there any think i need to look out foror is it just a matter of undoing the bolts and swapping them over
Simple as that, I think I may have undone the top rad-hose to get a better angle on the bolts with my dodgy spanner set Anything specific you mean by 'look out for'?
Ditto on the... Ditto on the top rad hose, bend it back on iself (as long as it's not old n crackly, if it is use the opportunity to replace both top n bottom hoses) and wire it back putting a loop around the bend to keep it crimped and stop you from losing all your coolant. Apart from that, piece of Cake! Edit: Oh and I didn't end up taking bottom shroud off...!
I undo the 4x10mm nuts with a ratchet spanner. makes life easy <3 If you cannot get to the bottom ones, crack the key just enough to start the starter motor for a feraction of a second without starting the car... this should open access to the other nut. I seem to remember I got the fan plus clutch fan assembly out the bottom of the engine in my NA (slip it past the swaybar and push aside bottom radiator hose). Make sure you use fresh spring washers on the new clutch fan assembly.
hey mate i did my N/A in half an hour without removing fan shroud or anything, just gotta take the blades off the clutch first and loosen the water pump belt a bit so you can spin the pulley to get the other 2 bolts for the clutch.
just dont drop the nuts or your spanner as they will land on your splash shield and be difficult to retrieve
Magnet on a stick I've got a large flathead screwdriver with a magnet off the arm of a computer hard drive platter. Will pick up just about anything. Just tape it on so it doesn't find something more magnetic to stick to
ooooorrrrrrr you could follow my advice and not drop it in the first place..... but yeah i agree, a magnetic pickup tool and a claw pickup tool for plastic or non magnetic things should be in every zedders tool box, near the top!
Wait... there is a splash shield that goes from the rad support back to the crossmember/steering rack??? I've never seen an OEM one of those before...
. actually your right, theres not is there? besides the point really isnt it? can we just agree on a) dont drop stuff b) a magnetic pick up tool or similar can be used c) it might be hard to pick up again with out said tool
Yes, Lets agree on the aforementioned points; despite all this talk of splash shields that may/may not exist, and its involvement in what is essentially, a piss-easy job. :zlove:
magnet on a stick, an essential for every Z owner mitch did you see Ron's, it was quite professional, even telescoped and all Yes im easily ammused
Unfortunately I did see Ron's and I got magnet envy. The telescopic function really is great, and it looked to be top quality. I prefer mine to be at full length from the start actually, why bother extending it when you can just change the angle of entry? I used to have a telescopic one, but with all the picking up, the head fell off.
haha well neither fan shroud nor splash shields exsist in this particular job so it should be piss easy
I had a telescopic one too, didn't end well and made me angry... I have a flexible Kinchrome one now, much much better. And I hear that they like it when it's full length the whole time, and it's always good to get the angle right
