Was driving back from Melbourne and went to shift into 4th from 5th and it wouldnt go into gear. I put it back in 5th drove on and next attempt it worked fine.

On my way to work and it suddenly jumped out of 4th and then wouldnt go back in. 1st, 3rd and 5th all shift fine but 2nd, 4th and reverse wont go in as if something is blocking the shifter.

It has a short shifter installed. Any ideas?

Has the shifter dropped in height? The shifter mount can fail and give similar symptoms.

If the shifter has dropped it will be due to the rubber support holding the shifter support fork up in position. Ill try find a pic. I had ours apart last night as i was installing it all with the conversion. Could have taken some piccies.

You can either replace the rubber support plate with another second handy, or diy a new mount. Its been done a few times before. have a look around.

Mount is a little split but even with the shifter in the right position and the engine off I cannot get it into 2nd, 4th or reverse. It just bangs against it as if there is no gate or anything there and wont go down.

I think I can conclude at this point the gearbox is totalled. Without which I have no car and cant work so there goes everything :(

Sometimes if when you have the engine off and you try to select a gear, depending where the gears have come to rest. You can have sticky selections. You need to rock the car when in a gear you can select for it to rotate the shafts.

When it's running, do you get gears?

There is a big difference between a totaled box and a simple fix. Have you checked your fluid levels?

Was the box working as it should be? Have there been recent issues you've noticed?

When its running I can shift into 1st, 3rd and 5th but 2nd, 4th and reverse wont go in as if something is blocking all the gates. Same with engine off.

Prior to this I could put it in all gears with the engine on or off with no problem.

Was working fine then suddenly ouldn't shift down into 4th, shoved it back into 5th and tried a few times, eventually it worked and continued on fine.

About an hour later, was working fine then suddenly popped out of 2nd, about 30 seconds later I couldnt get it into 2nd, 4th and reverese with the symptoms listed and that's where I sit now.

It's a little early to contemplate suicide(there are other possibilities and courses of action).
Possibly damaged/bent/broken Selectors(due to wear in the shifter bushes and rubber mount mentioned earlier, and by trying to force it into gear when the initial difficulty became obvious).

    If none of this applies,

Make sure that ALL the components outside of the G/box are in proper working order and condition, then if the problem still exists, decide whether you want to overhaul the box or replace with a good s/hand unit.
