Hey all, as above my brakes were clicking and squealing so i got new pads put on by a local mechanic. Theyre squealing still, possibly worse than before. Mechanic recommended new rotors. Can also hear a weird soft grinding when the brakes ARENT applied. Anyone got any ideas? Should I get new rotors? Mine look pretty worn down and rubbishy i think.. plus they get rusty when i dont drive the car for a day(???)
New pads often squeal until they're bedded in. I had some Ultimates fitted a couple of weeks ago, but the mechanics sprayed them with some sort of anti-squeal stuff. They're starting to squeal a bit now that the stuff has worn off, but your problem sound as though you need a Zed expert or brake specialist to look at them.
Had the same problem with my 4WD My pajero always makes soft grinding noise during driving. I asked a brake shop if the car need a new set of pads but it was not necessary. When I put brake, it makes squealing noise just as it need a set of pads. I have contacted two different shops but no one was able to rectify the problem.
squeeling i had a similar problem with my r33, changed the pads. major thing is worn discs, if you run your finger over the disc and you can feel a small groove say 1mm or more deep it would be a good time 2 get some new discs or you can be cheap and get them machined, but if they are 2 worn u wont be able 2 do this
RE-SQUEELING Hi squeeling brakes are usualy caused by using a cheap pad, have you had good quality pads fitted ? you only need your rotors changed if they are below the specs, have them tested with a micrometer to check them.if you have a noise coming from them without your foot on the brakes it is probably your hand brake adjusted too high with the new pads on and the pads are trailing.I hope this helps. squeeling squeeling is not caused by cheap pads... What is a good quality pads in your book? You can go out and buy $300 worth of brake pads like ebc etc but you will be going thru about 3 to 4 sets of pads before the rotors are gone. If you are not really sure what is going on goto a brakes specialist and get them checked out... if you want to know more about it check out this brake squeeling I know mine squeal and i know what the problem is my rotors need a skim thats all... If you read the above link rohanshepherd it may help with the problems you are having. I would not just goto a mechanic and get my brakes done i would goto a brakes mechanic and get them done only becuase i know from first hand. Dont get me wrong a mechanic can do everything but in th end its always good to see what they have to say. When your mechanic changed the pads did he check to see if the rotors needed to be machined? or new ones put on? that seems sus to me becuase they should be checking to make sure the rotor itself is fine. The only time you will have to change the rotor if they are under sized or of its wrapped. Nath
My breaks were squeeling recently, up until i changed my brakes. The squeeling was the result of 1) worn pads and 2) slightly lipped rotors. It was recommended againsts purchasing new ones as the it will only take a minimal amount of machinging before they would come good. What could have cost me $500-600 only cost me $45, and my breaking has improved a hell of a lot more. It might be worth while machining them, if they are only taking a minute amount off. If it requires 10-15 times for it to come good then you will definitely loose braking performance. Terry
Ask the mechanic if they reinstalled these http://www.ttzed.com/products/products_detail.cfm?CFID=25431930&CFTOKEN=67417937&cat=52&grouping=3&grouptitle=Nissan%20OEM&PartID=331&page=1&title=OEM%20Brake&do=detail As far as I'm awear they are used to stop squeeling
It's not the pads - it's the rotors Get the rotors machined whenever you change pads and you won't have a problem.
Did you apply brake greese to the shims? This can eliminate the vibration that causes the squeal. It comes in tubes from most outlets, red and green types.
Try this. Machining will definately help but mine was doing the same thing. I believe it can also be caused by the two metal backing plates on the pad vibrating. I got some anti squeal stuff from my local and once it set, the squeal disappeared without having to machine rotors. Take pads out and apply to back of pad between pad and backing plate. apply liberally. Another option for you. regards]John
Re: Try this. haha, squealing is never caused by worn pads.. that would be grinding, squealing noise comes from bewteen the piston and brake pad, i had brand new slotted rotors and brand new ferodo pads, squealed like a bitch.. pulled them out, put some anti-suqeal goo behind the pads, squeal gone (takes a couple of days for the shit to gammy up though and work properly.. its flurescent orange) try it..
Thanks very much for all the replies guys. The mechanic told me the rotors were lipped when he replaced the pads, and he said he put on heaps of anti squeal stuff onto the back of the pads. Looks like some new rotors are in order. There was a thread a little while ago that listed Hightek brakes as a good supplier of RDA rotors, i emailed them yesterday but have yet to hear back... Anyone know any suppliers (I'm in Sydney, but I guess it doesn't really matter) of these rotors or other cheapies? I'm trying to sell the car so I want the squeal/clunk/annoying fucking cacophony gone =) Edit: Its all good I called Hightek and theyre delivering new rotors tomorrow. thanks for your help guys.
