Total bummer guys, was taking my girl out for a spin to get that oil flowing (had just finished reassembly after bleeding lifters and replacing injectors etc) when I noticed that there was some steam/smoke coming from under the bonnet. Pulled over and sure enough it was gushing out everywhere, there's even some white smoke coming from the exhaust. And when I checked the oil it was milky brown :(
That's a blown head gasket if I'm not mistaken right?
If it is, how much does it cost to fix?

unlucky man. where abouts are you, if you good with the tools you could do most of it yourself. motor out jobbie though. does it need to be a rush job?

I'm in greenwood mate, yeah I can manage without it for a little while but I do really need her for my job cause I work some crazy hours and no backup car...

Well I have pretty much everything I could need except a few things like gaskets etc, and a spare day tomorrow and I could probs give up next weekend too...

I've never been deeper than taking out lifters to be honest. But I got that far easily enough.
Your saying I need to take the engine out?

its been done motor in before... better if you can take it out as you cant do extra shit at the same time and check over everything at the same time
its not something to fear doing yourself

well its just if im going to be taking the engine out i may as well just replace it with the spare VG30 i have. that one is all ready to go and in a lot better condition anyway :p just gotta unbolt it from the tranny and lift it out of it's body.

think i might get started on that then hey while i have some free time. is there anything you can recommend before i start? any tips or anything?

I just took the heads off my tt while the motor was still in the car and it's not worth it. Much easier to just pull the engine and be done with it.

Don't even bother with the one in the car now, very good chance it will have low compression after being overheated. On top of that you will need to get both heads resurfaced and possibly alot more work.

    Its easier

its easier to pull the engine and transmission out whilst still attached to one another, I did it the other way and it was a major pain in the arse. You may want to consider doing a manual conversion while your at it (if you wanna go that way and have an extra grand or two)

How?? I had to unbolt the trany to pull my engine out. No way in hell was it going to go in one piece. Maybe it's different with an auto?

According to the manual, you need to unbolt the auto before taking the engine out. If it is a manual, you can take them out together.

auto will come out also i've done it at least 4 times. You just need riase the front (i had it on stands) to give the auto some room and remove the driver dump & oil filter. It will be tight but it will come out even without removing the crossmember

Drop the crossmember a couple of inches and it will come straight out

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

lol, autos are easier to pull out while attached than a 5spd.

Drain the tranny fluid before sliding the drive shaft out too.

as mike mentioned. 4x 17mm nuts to undo the cross member, and drop it so it's off it's stud threads and the engine/tranny will slide out nicely with the right angle.

Good to know. Wish I knew that when I did mine. Removing and installing the gearbox was the most painful part of the engine pull. My mate is about to endure the same process so I'll let him know.
